Dark Eldar WebWay Portals Question

Hey I was just wondering if units arriving from reserves (able to because of webway portal) would come in on the turn they arrive even if the gate is not yet opened. In the rulebook it states to pick how each reserved unit is starting the game during army deployment.
(deep-striking, outflanking or are going to enter from their table edge) with the decision not being able to be changed later, the portal then allows one to enter through the portal (minus vehicles) regardless of what the reserved unit intended to to, treating the portal as a table edge pretty much.
So if a unit wished to enter through the portal would they originally start the game in reserves wishing to enter from theyre table edge unless they could outflank or deepstrike, meaning that if the portal was not open when they became available they would walk in from the edge of the table, just as if the portal was open they would roll to see if they are available then choose to deploy through the portal.

For example a unit of 20 kabalite warriors decides to start in reserves due to the perks of a webway portal (portal in another squad)
When it is decided how they are going to enter the only choice available to them is walking in from theyre edge, since they cannot deepstrike or outflank. Come the second turn the 4+ is rolled to see if the warriors become available, if they were to become available and no portal was opened wouldnt they come in from the owning players edge? Meaning that one cannot hold units in the reserved state until the portal is opened? the portal only working if on the turn after the portal is opened a unit were to arrive from reserves.
Thanks for any help clearing this up, pretty much can one hold units in reserve until the portal is open given it states in the rulebook "you may not delay making dice rolls or keep the reserve units hanging around off table until you decide you need them."

As far as I know, the portal counts as table edge, not very solid on this as I've never played DE before.

Re:Dark Eldar WebWay Portals Question

The portal has absolutely no bearing on placing units in reserve.
All it does is give an option for bringing units in from reserve.

Say you have your force and you decide to place your 20 warriors in reserve.
You don't even need to have a webway portal in your army to do so since the rules allow you to place them in reserve.
Since the warriors have no rule allowing them to deep strike or outflank, they will arrive from the table edge.
If, when they arrive, the webway portal has been activated, they may either move on from the table edge or from the edge of the webway portal marker.
If the portal has not not been activated when they arrive, they may only move on from the table edge.

If, on the other hand, you had a unit that was going to arrive from reserve via deep strike (or by outflanking) specified when it was put in reserve, and the portal was activated, the unit could arrive from the portal edge instead.

Dark Eldar WebWay Portals Question

Lerex, you have everything right except for thinking that the ability to Reserve is granted by the WWP. In 5th edition all missions allow the option to places as many units as you like into Reserve as a core rule.

Dark Eldar WebWay Portals Question

Yeah I think that sums it up pretty well. If you take the WWP then don't forget that you can declare to deep strike and then if the WWP is out you can go there.

Re:Dark Eldar WebWay Portals Question

In this codex, if the portal is not out, they can come in from the originally designated way, i.e. table edge, deepstrike, etc.

In the previous codex, if you ran a WWP, they could only come on through the portal, but you rolled as normal, so if the portal wasn't out yet, they would stand by in reserve until the portal became available, and would deploy on the turn that the portal became available. Of course, in the previous codex, you had to declare they were using the portal and no other way, and if they couldn't come out of the portal for some reason, such as if it was surrounded and they were walking, then the unit counted as destroyed.

Re:Dark Eldar WebWay Portals Question

Just a couple things to add, there are a few missions (Battle Missions) that do NOT have reserves as an option, and all units need to be deployed (unless they have Deep strike or other rules that allow them to be placed into reserves, such as a WWP).
In that case, if a WWP is not yet activated, then they have to stay in reserve until a WWP is activated, unless they have another means to enter from reserves. If they do have another means to be deployed aside from the WWP, you have to deploy them if the reserves roll comes up that they are deployed. If they have no other means to be deployed except from the WWP, they are held in reserve until a WWP is activated, then they HAVE to be deployed, you do not roll again.
Example: a Unit of beastmasters & beasts are in reserve in a mission that has no reserves (eg: Prepared Assault) and 2 haemonculii have WWPs but have not activated either one yet. So, on turn two there are no WWPs activated yet, but their roll comes up a 5. They have no other way to be deployed except for the WWP, so they are still in reserve. On turn three, a WWP is now active on the table, so the beastmasters & beasts must deploy, you do not roll for them again.
Lastly, If the mission has no reserves and the WWP is the only way units can come on the field and all WWP carriers are killed before they activate any WWPs, THEN those units still in reserve are considered destroyed, as they now have no way to make it to the table.
