So does anyone know how to do it? I saw something about using low grit sand paper on it works well when combined with the paint scheme, has anyone done this or seen it done?

how thick plasticard are you using ?
I've done using the back of a carpet knive (stanley) and draging it along the surface quite hard, and trying to replicate the wood texture (miniature wise, real wood boards is just flat right

worked out fine

If you're going for posts, use sprue bits, cut them to round, then score each side.

Otherwise, yeah, score it with the knife, pick a few areas for "knots" and try not to be too regular with the strokes, allow it to wiggle.

Re:How to make plasticard look like wood?

I used a old modeling razor saw. I used the back edge of my hobby knife to score lines to make the individual boards, than scraped the razor saw across the surface to make a wood grain effect. I just gave it a wash so you could see what it looked like, it would look a lot better with some paint, drybrushed and washed but you should be able to get the idea. Hope this helps.

click for bigger pic.

Or you could use real wood. Those stir-sticks are pine and come in a convenient size for modelling.

How to make plasticard look like wood?

Yeah I'd ather not, in my experience real wood (even the stir sticks) don't have that "cartoonish" look that GW minis do. It's like putting real cloth on a mini as a cape it just woulden't look right to me
