1" Safety Zone Around Everything

This is more of a "what is the thought-process here?" question... But people in this forum are inclined to
Think about such things so you are probably the best ones to ask.

What reasoning might have led to 8th editions obsession with keeping anything not actively fighting each other 1" or more apart? Why can't we be 1/2 an inch from a building? Why can't a failed charge end 1/64th of an inch from the enemy? Is GW suddenly afraid of Stranger Danger between Ungors and White Lions who are outside each others charge arc but might just reach over to
goose some elven caboose?

Even Gork will apparently honor this Personal Space no-fly zone when he hurries his Boyz to go fight. He is so impatient he reaches down with his green-godly hand to toss them into combat. 7th edition your whole army got tossed willy-nilly into your opponents battle line. In 8th? We politely land 1" away so proper greetings can be exchanged and your opponent given the right of way to charge.

So next time you are at a GW and they have that beautifully painted show-battle set up, nudge the friendly units up to 3/8" from each other like it was 7th edition. It's so... Naughty!

a) so you know they're not in it/fighting it/the same unit.
b) cuz 1 is often the width of rulers and such and thus you don't have to actually measure, but can just stick it between them
c) they were going to make it 1 mile, but in play testing games took too long

I'm not a fan of the 1" rule for un engaged friendly units. Everything else is fine though. But then again, I like hiding units/models behind other units.
