How does GW fare in the various regions?

How does GW fare in the various regions compared to each other? Is North America it's biggest buyer? How about the UK and Continental Europe? Any traction in Asia? I'll just assume Australia is bad.

How does GW fare in the various regions?

GW divide the world into;

Northern Europe (133)
Continental Europe (117)
North America (84)
Australia (36)
Other (12)

They don’t list the revenue from each region separately in their financial statements. In the 2010 statement they listed the number of shops in each region (numbers in brackets).

If we make the assumption that the revenues are roughly proportional to the number of shops in the region, it is clear that Northern and Continental Europe are much larger than everywhere else put together. I don’t think that would be a complete picture, since apparently sales in the NA region through independent shops are pretty healthy. On the whole, though, Europe seems to be where the action is.

It isn’t stated what countries are in Northern Europe, but it’s probably the UK.

Sale figures from Northern Europe must have been distorted by the export flow to Australia from Maelstrom and Wayland. Without data we can only speculate as to the extent of such sales.

Re:How does GW fare in the various regions?

Thanks, Kilkrazy, not what I expected at all. First of all it's a weird way to divide up the world. Normally "Northern Europe" means Scandinavia to me but I bet it's just UK & Ireland here. Australia has almost half as many stores and NA?! That makes no sense on a couple levels considered their Australian policies and the size of the two regions. And finally all of Asia is "other". Surprised we see any Asian flags on Dakka with that measly dozen stores.
I guess GW power base remains in its homeland.

I speculate that GW still have a bit of a commercial hangover from the rapid, unsustainable expansion they did on the back of the LoTR bubble.

Their revenue is not yet up to where it was in 2005, the year after the bubble burst, and it looks worse if you adjust for inflation.

It took them two or three years to realise they had overextended themselves. Then it took them two or three years to re-organise, get rid of a lot of shops, the Bitz service, specialist games, and install proper EPOS and production streamlining. They may not have finished all of that.

Though the cost reductions in the past two years have been impressive, the value of inventory in 2010 was nearly 10% of the total revenue. I interpret Finecast as a way of reducing that dead weight and also transport costs.

I think they probably saw Australia as a market they could easily saturate against weak competition from independents, like they did in the UK, whereas North America would require much, much more investment because of the higher population and greater number of sizeable towns and cities with healthy, established independent shops.
