These fellows are quite good on the "tactics part" http://space-wolves-grey.blogspot.com/

Also, a good thing about the GK codex is that it is a tad powerfull, so you can play whatever you like and still be good. (Unlike older codexes or tyranids.)

In short go for whatever you feel like. The only real bad options are blood claws (and the wariants) withouth a wolf priest and the irion priest. Everything else is just gravy.

Re:space wolves army building basics

I quick search in the articles section would've revealed these 2 tactica articles regarding the Space Wolves, written by a devilishly handsome chap no-less.

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Space_Wolves_Tactica%2C_5th_Ed/09_Codex

http://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/Space_Wolf_Tactica_5th_Ed/09_Codex:_Part_2._Kind_of...

Hopefully they should provide a good base of knowledge for you to know what to do/where to do.

Regarding Grey Hunter spam, it's akin to Tactical Squad spam; they're easily the more superior of the 2 troop choices available, so you're going to focus on them anyway, if you spam them however is up to you... I'd be more concerned about Long Fang spam as that's the more common/less original IMHO. You're likely to find spam in let-lists, but less likely in an individual or non-competitive players list IMO.

Well Space Wolves can do either Close Combat or Long Ranged, but they aren't their natural play-styles IMHO, whilst the latter of which (shooty) requires 'spamming' of Razorbacks and Long Fangs in particular and the former (close combat) relies heavily on Thunderwolves and Wolf Guard. Whilst close quarters (their best role IMHO) comes much more naturally to them.
Typically, the Blood Angels and Black Templars are the choppy Space Marine Chapter(s), whilst Codex Marines or Dark Angels are the Shooty Space Marine Chapter(s). Grey Knights can do both.

Space wolves are not CC oriented, but they are 12" oriented. Get in rapid fire/melta range and shoot. And now your oponent shoots back, you activate wolf banner and you eat them up in CC.

Space wolves are good all rounders. You can also build them for range but 12" in the natural element.

Edit: If you want Assault marines you need blood angels who are a fast assault army, Black templars who have prefered enemy (from emperors wow) and furius charge. Black templars also have a unique long ranged game due to cyclone missile launchers and tank hunter. GK will kick ass from 24" and into CC but they have a very low model count.

Re:space wolves army building basics

Well they are wolf guard but not terminators

Wolf priest can lose the runic armor, he wants to be cheap and cheerful.

The bloodclaws might want a meltagun- you've got a combimelta in there, you'd be better off with another shot, even if it is BS3. Also a MotW is valuable in that unit. Fist is a good choice though, you don't want to be tarpitted by a dread, maybe even up the ante to a chainfist. Dropping the runic armor on the priest can afford you both if im right on the costs (going off the top of my head so check that ). The GH are... well its kinda hard to get them wrong you might want to lose some of your upgrades, but I'd recommend trying the full kit first so you can decide what you "need" and what you don't.

I'd drop the siege shields and the search light. They are cool, but I like a cheap pair of vindi's, that way when they get immobilized/weap. destroyed I don't feel so bad.

The big downside I see here is a lack of anti-transport ability. Typhoons or longfangs with ML's would do the list a world of good, and being bumped up to 1750 would too (LR is a bit hefty in 1500p or less imo)

I think that's definitely a solid list biohazard, should serve you well and be a good start. I would however recommend dropping the powerfists from the Grey Hunter squads; the Standard and Wolf Guard should be enough counter-assault along with their standard 3 attacks whilst powerfists only provide an extra 2 attacks. With the extra points I'd recommend dozer-blades (or a siege shield) on the vindicators, partially because it looks awesome and partially for reliability. I'd also DEFINITELY invest in extra armour for the LRC, as that's got a lot of points in it so you don't want it letting you down. With the remaining 25-15pts you could get another special weapon on the blood claws or a MotW for the hunters?

Automatically Appended Next Post:
On top of what Stormcrow said; they can also do both in the same list.
