Re:Best Software for running Tournament

I use notepad.... It's as accurate and bug free as the user, it doesn't require much in the way hardware to run it, usually just a specialized, graphite-tipped stylus. The input readily accepts specialized characters and data recovery and correction from prior rounds is a real breeze. It does tend to be a limited-use licence, though.

If I need something that allows for a larger degree of visibility, I will tend to go with whiteboard or poster pad, but that's only in specific situations.

I use Excel. I'm not a super spreadsheet ninja or anything, but it didn't take long to develop a workbook with a roster, a sheet for each round, and a totals page. I just set it up so it would create pairings by record and give me all the point totals and tie breakers.

It's nice to be able to print out standings and round assignments easily as well.

Notepad doesnt auto calculate pairings, it is creates a crazy amount of work with large events. Ive had people take 20 mins trying to work on pairings due to their stubborness of using paper and pen

Excel is fine since it uses mathematical formulas which speeds up the work

With swiss perfect Im ready for the next round 3 seconds after the last record is given to me, but of course it's just a graphical spreadsheet with swiss specific rules

If you plan on doing a larger event (over 20 people) you really need some kind of program. Writing things down manually is bad because its error prone and slow

Re:Best Software for running Tournament

A lot of us here in Europe use GOEPP. More info here:

http://www.tabletoptournaments.net/be/t3_goepp.php

It's free to use. Would be neat to see some people from across the pond use it and also upload the tournament details to the Tabletoptournaments website.

Let us know if you check it out! You can use it in conjunction with the T3 website. use the site to do all your tournament administration and then just use the export function to upload everything directly into GOEPP. Very handy, and beats working in excell, especially when you have a large number of people inscribing!
