Tor Games Relics, what is it like?

I have been surfing about on here (I think it was Manchus or one of the exodus threads) and Relics caught my attention.

Having looked about on their website, I found the models much to my taste. They are pretty much to my taste (Britanan puppets).

But I am curious about a few things that I am hoping a few people on here can help me with.

1) Game scale - Lots of models or few?

2) Rules - Are they a in print? Or is it downloaded?

3) Style of the game - Is it tactical/competitive/laid back/a mixture or something else.

Sorry if this is in the wrong place. I am looking for alternatives to 40k and I would like to know of what experiences other Dakka members have had with this game system, which from looking at the blog does still seem to be getting of its feet. Any input would be most welcome.

Tor Games Relics, what is it like?

Hey alphaomega,

It's nice to see your may be interested in Relics!

Let me see if I can answer your questions for you!!

alphaomega wrote:
1) Game scale - Lots of models or few?

The game is no where near as many models as 40k. More along the lines of a Warmachine game with a good bunch of infantry.

We tend to play game sof 200 to 400 points when testing and these will equate to forces as small as 8 models all the way upto 45 models maybe some more. All depends on the faction and profiles you take. The Britanans can field quiet a large force for the points of rag dolls. But it is fun scything through them with the Orcnar.

alphaomega wrote:
2) Rules - Are they a in print? Or is it downloaded?

The rules are currently downloadable. as Chibi says, you can find them on this page: http://www.torgaming.co.uk/rd/relics/

NOTE: the rules currently available are the Alpha rules. I am just making the tweaks for the Beta and hope to have a 'pre-beta' version available in a week or so. This will be 'pre-beta' as it will not be laid out or have diagrams in it. But will essentially be what we expect to the the final Version 1 of the rules.

alphaomega wrote:
3) Style of the game - Is it tactical/competitive/laid back/a mixture or something else.

The game uses a alternating activation sequence, all combat and shooting by a unit is done during that units activation. So there is a deep level of tactics around what order you and your opponent activates your units. You'll find you will discover a lot of nuances in the system that may not jump out during the reading of the rules (use of lingering effects is a good one) and the command rules means you have to think about keeping your forces within a commanders range to get the best out of the units. Loss of a commander doesn't necessarily mean you loose the game, but it seriously reduces your tactical choices....

It can lead to some seriously nail biting moments during the game!!!!

I hope that has answered your questions, please feel free to ask any more.

I read it on the homepage a few weeks back before seeing the minis.
Very grim and atmospheric in a very unique way. And seeing the rules, the minis and working it together with the fluff, I do look forward to getting a starter set towards the end of next month

And yeah back ground is very important (hence until recently I did really enjoy Warhammer/40k), I am more of a narrative gamer I guess

You'll be pleased to hear that 'fluff' is one of the big areas for us. We believe that a game needs an in depth back ground and world created for it.

I will be uploading more content to the sites wiki soon, including some description of the main settlements, profile descriptions and some major character background (including an article on King Jorje himself, and he's not even a playable model!!!)

Having studied the alpha rules I am curious to know if wargear for each unit is going to be listed in the beta version, as I am curious to know what everything is equiped with and maybe this is part of the background materials that you could work in (if it is okay to suggest that).

alphaomega wrote:Having studied the alpha rules I am curious to know if wargear for each unit is going to be listed in the beta version, as I am curious to know what everything is equiped with and maybe this is part of the background materials that you could work in (if it is okay to suggest that).

If you mean wargear that can be purhased to provide further rules, then no. But if you mean for fluff then that will likely be included in the profile descriptions. For instance, below is the 'flavour' text for the Britanans Troopers. Is that the sort of thing you mean?

(Note, this has not been edited for grammar etc yet so may contain problems.... )

There is a kind of splendiferous naive simplicity to the countless ranks of Troopers that form the bulk of the Britanan Army. On the march they are an awesome sight to behold, their heads bobbing in unison as they steadily advance forwards, each soldier perfectly in step with the next. The untrained eyes of a weary traveller would be forgiven for mistakenly believing that a hundred legged beast was descending upon him from a distance when confronted with a horde of such magnitude.

After the meddling of the Vaettir unleashed the Great Collapse and plunged the world of Relicia into darkness, King Jorje came to realise that the only way to successfully restore his beloved empire to its former glory from the devastating losses they had suffered was to swiftly rebuild his armed forces before the enemies he had garnered over the years of Britanan's conquest took advantage of his weakened state.

The creation of the first battalion of Britanan Troopers was the end product of the Kings frantic rushing and the initial prototypes were stitched together relatively quickly. The time it took to turn the Kings original design into something workable that could be produced on a massive scale was kept to a minimum and the troopers were crafted to a no fuss, bare bones specification.

The average Britanan Troopers have terrible accuracy and are not particularly skilled in the use of their muskets, in fact they are often just as effective in battle when swinging their weapons as improvised clubs. The real strength of the Britanan Troopers lies in their numbers and fortunately the King is able to deploy overwhelming masses of them on numerous fields of war at any single time. Fighting in such numerous clusters as the Britanan Troopers do enables them to easily support each other in battle and the combined might of their firepower often allows them to take down many of their superior foes with remarkable ease.

Woe betide the enemy who sees a line of Britanan Troopers approaching and judges them solely on their stature.
