He told me the following. The boss of Tamiya had visited Britain and was horrified at how expensive his company's models were being sold for. You know what he did? He ordered the prices to be reduced. Now not being a military modeller myself I can't say what kind of impact he has had, perhaps someone else could shed some light on it? The reason I posted it was to make the point that it is not impossible to reduce prices and still make money.

Tamiya prices have not been reduced recently. The reason they are very high is because the GBP has lost nearly 40% of its value against the JPY in the past three years.

This pushes up the price of Japanese models because the British importer has to spend more GBP to buy the JPY he needs to pay for them.
