Best Avengers movie so far?

You know, when I first wrapped my head around what Marvel were attempting to do, I really didn't think they'd pull it off. Introducing four major characters (and a few key supporting ones) over four films before pitching them together in one final effort seems to be putting a lot of faith in your audience. It didn't help that in my eyes, these were fairly minor characters in the comic book world. Understand that outside of America, only the big three (Superman, Batman and Spiderman) had any real market penetration with the masses.

But I have to admit it, I'm glad I jumped on board for the ride. Let's not kid ourselves that any of these are great films. Yes they're fun, but they pale in comparrison to other classic cinema adventures such as Raiders of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future, Star Wars or Lord of the Rings. However, that's not really the point. What we have is a fantastic experiment that only people of our calibre can truly appreciate. Witness the furious nudging between nerds as they spot a cross reference to another film and scorn the mass exodus during the end credits leaving only "those who know" waiting for the short teaser for the next bit.

Of course all of this culminates in the big team up next summer which might not rival The Dark Knight Rises in terms of quality, but having seen teaser trailers for both, strangely it was The Avengers that got me the most excited (possibly because they showed you bugger all in the DKR teaser).

As for my favourite so far? I'm going to plump for Thor. Arguably, it had the hardest job to do, but Kenneth Branagh bought a Shakespearean edge to a potentially daft plotline and the likes of Hopkins, Elba and Hiddlestone delivered the necessary gravitas. Hemsworth was pretty likeable too and putting Natalie Portman in your film never hurts either

Haven't seen Thor or Captain America (Both are in the Netflix que), but I don't think anyone could nail his super hero quite as well as Robert Downey Jr. nailed Stark. Didn't care for the sequel as much, but I only saw it once and it was way past my bed time when I did.

I take that part about nailing his role, actually. Edward Nortan did an outstanding job as Hulk, too bad they didn't get him back for The Avengers or Hulk II or whatever.

With Firefly's Joss Whedon at the helm for the upcoming Avengers movie I think its in good hands. Shame that Spiderman and Wolverine are tied up with other studios but the Avengers have enough heroes and they're going to include others that don't have their own film as well.

But I have yet to see Captain America or Thor....so of the three remaining I'd rank them as: Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Hulk

Haven't seen Cap or Thor yet, so my pick is only based on the other films, and on that basis I'm also going for Ironman, just really great couple of films so far, but the first takes it just for the last few minutes, I will literally let that film run anytime I catch it on Sky just for his final line.
Also hoping we get Mandarin in the third.

Slarg232 wrote:
I take that part about nailing his role, actually.
Best Avengers movie so far?

My Favourite was the first Iron Man movie (dialogue was brilliant). I liked it so much that I bought it on DVD. The second Iron Movie was good but fell into classic Hollywood trap of having too much going on as well as being too cliché.

I have high hopes for the Avengers movie. I’ve always been slightly pessimistic about an Avengers movie but Marvel has done the correct thing in subtly piecing everything together with each new movie. The fact that the cosmic cube has already been introduced in both Thor and Captain America will make it less complicated to introduce in the Avengers. The scientific/Shakespearian approach taken with Thor makes the character less mismatched with the other characters.

There’s a chance with multiple villains and sub plots, the story might become overly complicated like Spiderman 3. Hopefully Marvel maintain their subtle approach and focus on 1 or 2 complications with a heavy focus on dialogue between all 4 characters.
