First Look at Superman (official pic not a leak)

Here's a look at Henry Cavill as Superman in a picture that screams "This is a Zack Snyder movie!" Not overly impressed myself. Superman is one costumed hero that shouldn't be afraid of showing off his primary colours. Plus the costume looks plastic.

First Look at Superman (official pic not a leak)

Superman was always one of my least favorite characters when it comes to popular geek stuff. But this movie has a lot of promise with Christopher Nolan at the helm (edit: turns out he's not directing but is a producer and a story writer) and a solid cast.

Plus General Zod!

The last Superman movie didn't have the entertaining blockbuster action sequences you'd expect from the Man of Steel. It also failed to make you really care about the characters and what was going on. Hopefully Nolan can turn things around like he did for Batman!

Singer was a little to reverent to the older films combined with a long messy production (think Duke Nukem Forever) and I think that held him back from doing something better than Superman Returns ended up being, which was essentialy a remake of the original Donner film. The airplane rescue in IMAX 3D was still really awesome though.

They never really got to play up the more Sci-fi elements of Superman. Sure he is damn near invulnerable by human terms, but in the comics (and animated series) he faces alien armadas, Brainiac, Doomsday, Darksied, Lobo, and a host of other threats that can match him. Batman is an urban drama, Superman is Science Fiction.

First Look at Superman (official pic not a leak)

AvatarForm wrote:What defeats any Superman movie for me is that this guy is nigh indestructible and the only way to deal with him comes in an extremely rare form... or harming his loved ones... whom he should take better care of as they seem to be kidnapped too regularly...

Whereas, Batman and other "heroes" are all mortals... the risks are more real and the plots are more believable, not to mention, there are more of them...

Although I'd also say the problem is really with writers' depictions of his power levels in recent decades, rather than an intrinsic flaw of the character. I mean, at one point he routinely pushed planets around, bathed in supernovas and flew at superluminal speeds. The Donner film (and therefore the Singer film), being rooted in the '70s era Superman, tended toward the more extreme side of the power scale. Ever-increasing powers make for great spectacle, but they certainly don't help people identify with the character.

Contrast those examples with the Superman cartoon of the '90s, in which he felt it when he got punched in the face by a giant robot, for instance. I think that level of power works much, much better in a world also containing Batman.

Which segues into another point. To a certain degree, the "can't be beaten" thing could be said about most superheroes. Is the outcome ever in question for Batman? You know he's going to overcome any challenge. That's because of smarts and guts rather than powers, but victory is still assured. The difference then IMO must be whether the characters are relatable. And that also comes back to superpowers, right? It's really not about normal lives and secret identities because most of us can identify more with Clark Kent's life than Bruce Wayne's. But we CAN better relate to Batman using smarts and skill to defeat his enemy (and getting some bruises, etc in the process). Defeating your enemy by flinging a small continent into space, different thing.

So IMO the real trick to making Superman work is to find the right power level that retains some spectacle but falls well short of godlike.

Edit: Ahtman also makes good points about their respective villains and threats. Although then again the problems still exist when you try to team them. Which is probably why the Superman of the Justice League cartoons is more inline with the Superman cartoon from a power level standpoint.

Off-topic, but IMO that's a challenge for the Avengers movie too. When you think about various threats and their respective scales, how do you portray Iron Man and Cap fighting side-by-side? One can fly and supersonic speed and is virtually a one-man army, and the other...runs around on the ground punching out people and throwing a shield. You can pull it off in the comics easier than you can on screen.
