Anyone have any use for these guys in 5th Ed?! I certainly don't! I lost the Runtherds from shooting before I could use them! Serisouly, with the woud allocation rules you lose them pretty quick! Making a Gretchin squad absolutely useless! I have a total of 30 and they are good for nothing! I should have just bought more shoota boyz!

gretchin uses are a cheap meat shield or 2 marchign in front of your boys giving them a cover save.

my personal fav use for gretchin are as follows

bubble wrap : bubble wrap a group of artillary or lootas with a group of 19 gretchin w/ ruth. they count as scoring and are protecting fire power.

objective congo line: so you drew capture and draw.. err control ... well have da orks go krumping an dhave that group of 19 gretchin w/ ruth keep 2 inch coherance and congo line objective to objective. depending on placment I've seen 1 group of 29 (w/ 2 ruth) hold 3 spots

Agreed on the bubble wrap. Especially with a capture and control mission.

You ideally want a unit to control an objective and an effective firesupport unit. Other than it uses two FOC slots, Gretchin fulfill the objective control piece rather cheaply. Even fully outfitted, they cost you @100 points. Now you can add a lootas squad or artillery mob that can be placed anywhere irrespective of actual cover because you have your blanket of gretchin to provide them with cover saves.

Now I would never go ape-sh## on that and field 3 lootas with 3 gretchin units but I think 1 gretchin unit is a reasonable benefit to orks.

Also I will point out the single drop-pod dreadnought is really a non-option as is the deamon prince or deamon lord.
The grabba sticks mean -3 attacks (to a minimum of 1) and 30 gretchin mean you will not accomplish anything charging a gretchin mob with a lone figure.

One of the guys in my group has been playing orcs since rogue trader. He has about 60 gretchin and he uses an appropriately sized squad based on point limit of the game. They are great for sitting on an objective, tying up stout units like dante and sanguinary guard, and can do some damage when massing fire with their acceptable BS. They also work providing cover saves.

edit*
They also have grabba sticks, so they make an assaulting unit lose attacks. Handy when they get involved in a fight between your opponent and somthing you actually want to keep like boys or nobz.

They're good shots hide some among the rest of the Boyz, they won't attract much attention, so when they're close enough, they can start peppering the enemy units that aren't engaged in Close combat and are T3. It's always annoying when you lose three guardsmen to a unit you can't afford to retaliate against because a nearby ork mob is about to decapitate you and you need to blaze away at them for all your worth. This kind of harassment can make the difference between your ork mob fresh from annihilating one enemy unit and ready for the next being mown down or not

I either use Grots as sacrifical screening, as a hiding spot for my KFF Mek early on ("Do you really want to shoot autocannons at these Grots"), or to walk on from a table edge and claim an objective. Nowadays since I decided to field a Killwagon, I occasionally just part a Grot unit inside it as a scoring upgrade.

To a lesser extent, it's worth taking a weakened unit of Grots and running them in a Wagon alongside a character like, say, Ghaz. When it's time to crack a deathstar open, have the Grots charge the center of said unit so the majority of attacks get allocated to them instead. They will die several times over, but your killy units will be relatively unimpeded and be able to kill things after shrugging off the attacks of one or two guys in turn.

MSU multiassaulting and attack-pulling is a minor trick that when practiced properly can make all sorts of differences for your army.
