possible to assault through an existing unit?

I had a argument with a GK player....he seems convinced that he can assault a unit while crossing another unit, I dont believe its true but they he proposed this crazy situation
lets see what dakka thinks since he wont listen to reason from me, hel only listen to dakka and GW

Of course he cant go through the 2 inch coherency gaps because even the smallest 40K base is 1 inch in diameter which would still leave a half inch between it and the model of a unit he isn't assaulting.

Anyways....He made the argument (or hypothetical situation）: a 2" "conga line" of troops, suppose a shooting unit creates 5 wounds on this conga line and the owner decides to put the wounds to troops in the middle thus breaking coherency should the saves fail. Then if the saves fail this would create a large 15" gap in the front unit.
Could a different enemy unit then assault through this unit gap provided the target unit of assault was within 6" ?

Thanks for your time Dakka.

possible to assault through an existing unit?

he cannot run through a squad to assault unless he is using something like jump packs to hop over stuff. If he puts his stuff in a conga line and lets the middle guys die to make room he would be able to assault although the unit that is out of coherency will have to waste a move to get back into coherency. Seems like a lot of work just to try to pull off that trick when you could just go around.

possible to assault through an existing unit?

What leads you to believe that it wouldn't be legal?

Assaulting models can't move through other models, and they can't move into base contact with models from units that they aren't assaulting. Beyond that, if the model can physically move into base contact, then it's free to do so. There is no rule that prevents you from moving through other units, other than the 1" rule which is suspended when assaulting.

+1 Insaniak. You may move through the coherency gaps, as you can move within 1" of any model friendly or otherwise during your assault move. You may only get into base contact with those units you are assaulting, but a 1mm gap is good enough. This is the precise reason that the Fish'o'Fury doesn't work well in 5th. With the 1" bubble the used to exist throughout all phases, the Devilfish was a perfect road block. Now that models may freely move within 1" of it, they can usually counter assault a rapid fire squad easily.
