Cheapest way to store/transport models?

I will be purchasing a rather large Menoth army tomorrow containing all of these models:

Grand Scrutator Severius
High Reclaimer
High Exemplar Kreoss
Feora
Harbinger of Menoth
Amon Ad-Raza
Epic High Reclaimer
Epic Kreoss
Epic Feora

1 Avatar
1 Devout
1 Crusader
1 Repenter
1 Revenger
1 Guardian

10x Deliverers
10x Flameguard
6x Knights Exemplar
10x Zealots
6x Flameguard
10x Choir + 2 warpriest leaders

2 Paladins
3 Wracks
1 Paladin Vilimon
1 Exemplar Seneschal
1 Monolith Bearer
1 Piper of Ord

I need a way to transport them safely but I don't want to spend a lot on a battlefoam bag.

I have an old suitcase that I can probably put some foam sheets in, so that is an option. I just want to check all of my options before I spend more than I have to on storing my models.

Thanks in advance,
Matticus

Plano pistol cases are pretty cheap, about $10-13 per case and you can fit models of various sizes without needing specialized foam. They come with two pieces of egg crate and a layer of pluck and pull, but I left that layer intact as a top piece.

I've also been enjoying the Sabol pluck and pull trays I picked up form my local game store. They're more expensive than the plano cases since I'm paying about $10 per tray, but I can stand them upright and fit more minis per tray in them too. Either of these options are significantly cheaper than custom Battle foam and work fine for me. Yes, Battle Foam is certainly very nice and makes a solid product, but it's out of my budget for a while.

Re:Cheapest way to store/transport models?

I respectfully disagree. The official GW case quality isn't any better than the Plano pistol cases and are very expensive while being nearly as space inefficient as the Plano cases. At least with the egg crate style you can lay down a 6" model (like an angelius) and transport it with no issues.

I've never done this idea specifically, but I was thinking about this. I own a Citadel case and in my opinion, it wasn't worth the money. If I stopped and thought for a few minutes I could have done a million other things and saved money.

I've always thought that buying the foam trays you need and fitting them into a plastic cooler would be interesting. It wouldn't be super-secure, but you would have a really well-sealed storage case and it would be cheap and could be secure (no models shaking around) if you spent time fitting everything.

That said, I think a pistol case would be the best option. There's also another case company that makes cheaper cases that are really nice, I forget what their name is but I'm sure I found them on either The War Store's site or Miniature Market.

Harbor Freight Tools has a pluck and pull foam Aluminum Tool Case.

MSRP I think it about $30, but they have so many sales and coupons you can probably get it for $20-$25. It is online or you can get it in store if you have one near you.

It has about 2 1/2 inch thick foam with a cover over it. And in the lid are a bunch of pouches that you can put in your dice, templates, cards, tape, etc. And how it is set up you can easily but in your army book as well.

It also has dividers and a shoulderstrap, but those were not really exciting to me. But they do help make it even more customizable and easier to transport.

Cheapest way to store/transport models?

I use a metal toolbox. I sprang for a more expensive model that can be locked to secure the contents, but ultimately you can get them as cheap as you like, just make sure they're ferrous metal (most are.) After that, slam a magnet or two into your bases and go to town. I find that 4x 1/16" neodymium magnets secure my large jacks (plastic) while two of the same keep my infantry well stuck to the drawers.

To affix the magnets, I use a blob of greenstuff under the infantry bases. On the jacks, I dremel the little holes under the bases until they're wide enough to jam a magnet in (they're a hair too small normally) and use a dot of superglue. YMMV, of course, it's just how I did things (dremeling not really necessary if you just use moar greenstuff!)

This model of toolbox might be a good fit for most armies:
Google link

This is the model I used:
Craftsman link
