A rune priest and maybe a box of terminators.

This is what I have:

Rune Priest w/ Power Armor (you can say its runic armor) and a plasma pistol.

Battleforce box

Box of Wolf Guard Terminators.

A Razorback Kit (would use as rhino).

I managed to make a 1000 point list out of this much.

New Space wolves player, list

Rune Priests can be made out of the standard Space Wolves kits, which I recommend buying in number along with Meltaguns (packs of 5 go for like $8-10 on the GW website). For every pack you buy, buy a Razorback kit to go with it. For $2 more it comes with the Razorback turret AND the parts to make a Rhino, so if you build the parts but don't glue them in place you can use them as Rhinos for larger packs or Razorbacks for smaller packs.

Long Fangs are an absolute must, but I do not recommend buying the Devastator box, because it comes with a mix of heavy weapons, and Long Fangs are best used exclusively with Missile Launchers (It should be noted that occasionally some people from these forums take a couple Plasma Cannons in full units instead of all Missile Launchers, in order to combat tougher infantry, but to start I'd recommend a pack leader and 5 guys with Missile Launchers for each pack of Long Fangs). You can easily get Missile Launcher pieces from www.thewarstore.com for about $8.99 per Missile Launcher, and combined with a Wolf Pack you can easily make several units of Missile Launcher wielding Long Fangs without having to buy a ton of Devastator/Tactical Squad boxes.

Once you have a good core of Grey Hunters and Long Fangs with transports for each unit, and at least one Rune Priest as HQ, you can start buying support models. Wolf Scouts are a good purchase, as are Land Speeders and Dreadnoughts. If you want to invest some money into a good centerpiece unit you can buy Thunderwolves. They are very strong in melee and absorb a ton of firepower that could otherwise be fired at your vehicles, and with the right equipment they can take a huge amount of punishment before going down. A number of 3rd party companies make Thunderwolf Mounts of varying quality for varying price, and there are a number of conversion guides using GW models to make your own. Regardless, they are a decent addition to your list once you have all the stuff you need.

Here is a basic list to start with that I use as the core of any army I build. Most armies I take to tournaments or play with competitively use this format with additions or subtractions as necessary for the style I want to play:

Rune Priest (Chooser of the Slain, Living Lightning, Tempest's Wrath) - 100
4 Wolf Guard (3x Power Fist, 4x Combi-Melta) - 152
5 Wolf Scouts (Meltagun, Mark of the Wulfen, Meltabombs) - 125
8 Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Mark of the Wulfen, Rhino) - 185
9 Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Wolf Standard, Mark of the Wulfen, Rhino) - 200
5 Grey Hunters (Meltagun, Razorback w/ TL Lascannon) - 155
Land Speeder (Multi-Melta, Extra Armor) - 70
Land Speeder (Multi-Melta, Extra Armor) - 70
6 Long Fangs (5 Missile Launchers, Razorback w/ TL Lascannon) - 215
6 Long Fangs (5 Missile Launchers, Razorback w/ TL Lascannon) - 215
Total 1,497

This gives you a good mix of models and is a relatively effective list in its own right. For higher points I usually add another pack of Grey Hunters in a Razorback and another Rune Priest, and I usually trade the Wolf Scouts and the Land Speeders for Thunderwolves these days, or possibly Njal Stormcaller. At lower points I tend to drop the Wolf Scouts and the Land Speeders and knock one model out of each pack of Long Fangs depending on how low I need to go.

The reason I suggest the above list to newer players as a good starting point is because it can all be assembled relatively easily with purchases from www.thewarstore.com at a 20% discount, and basically ALL of the infantry can be made using the Space Wolves box. You need a grand total of 39 Power Armored infantry models and 5 Scout Armored models, which means if you buy 4 boxes of Space Wolves, a Scout box, 5 Razorbacks, 2 Land Speeders, and some Missile Launchers/Meltagun pieces you can get everything for around $415 plus shipping. You already have some of the stuff, so you should be able to knock some off that total price.

Anyway, I hope that's the kind of advice you are looking for. It gives you a starting point and something to work towards, as well as a good mix of basic infantry and a solid vehicle count, all of which you can build around to increase your collection.

Good luck!

Heh, no problem. I usually try to make an effort to steer people down the right path when buying an army, because GW can sucker people into purchasing kits they really don't need, and then you are left with models that may or may not be of use to you. I'd rather spend a few minutes sharing what I've learned over the years than see a new player quit the hobby because what they bought looks cool, but is not effective. I've been down that road before and it's no fun.

Welcome to the hobby, and welcome to the Sons of Russ. Glad I was able to be of service!
