I'm trying WFB after 40k, and need help choosing an army.

I've had a look at the different armies, and the most appealing armies are High Elves, The Empire, and Dwarves. In 40k, I originally played Eldar, but switched to Orks, and enjoyed that much more. I'd like something with a clearly defined role, on after playing Orks, maybe something with a smaller number. Thanks for any help.

I'm not the most experienced on fantasy, but this is what I know.

High Elves - You get Teclis, arguably the best mage in the game.
Empire - You get some solid gunlines, and the steam tank.
Dwarves - You get no magic, but tough infantry.

These are just the things I've picked up on after reading posts here and there. Hardly the most thorough explanations, but I hope it helps you out.

Also make sure you like the models before you commit to buy. Painting models you don't like is miserable.

Re:I'm trying WFB after 40k, and need help choosing an army.

Empire and Dwarfs are both generally conceived of as shooting armies. They can field big block of decent infantry backed by loads of dispel dice and tons of war machines and nasty shooting. Empire are more of a horde army, Dwarfs are more elite.

High Elves are obviously an elite army, with a dominating magic phase if you take Teclis, that rely on killing things before they can strike back. Their shooting isn't as good as the aforementioned but they can field some nasty elite infantry.

Honestly your best bet is picking what appeals to you and trying to make it work. You'll enjoy it more.

Other armies have some interesting options as well, apologies if these overgeneralizations offend someone:

Beastmen - Fast, close combat oriented Horde army with ambush rules. Lots of monster choices.
Brettonians - Fast, hard hitting Cavalry focus, getting a new book sometime after Ogres, have a very distinctive heraldry look.
Daemons of Chaos - Elite army with a lot of variety and potential for going to extremes, be it magic, close combat, toughness or shooting. All units cause fear and are unbreakable in their own way.
Dark Elves - Elite army, all units have hatred, high initiative low armour and toughness like High Elves. Nasty close combat options, cheap monsters like the Hydra.
Lizardmen - Dominating magic phase, slow and tough infantry options.
Ogre Kingdoms - Your entire army is monstrous. Getting a new book imminently. Very small model count, very elite, brutal close combat options.
Orcs and Goblins - Horde army, strong magic, very numerous war machines, fast cavalry, characters.
Skaven - Horde army, very powerful monsters like the Hellpit Abomination, very good shooting, strong magic, low leadership and likely to flee.
Vampire Counts - Poor quality but enduring infantry that can be raised from the dead, Grave Guard deathstar, all units cause fear, unbreakable army, extremely powerful characters, strong magic phase, access to Ethereal units.
Tombs Kings - Similar infantry to Vampire Counts with better shooting and less teeth to their characters.
Warriors of Chaos - Balanced army with elite and horde options, lots of monstrous options, strong magic, extremely powerful characters.
