GW stores' FB pages

I did not want to hijack the other thread about liking a GW store's Facebook page, so I figured I would start a new thread.

What do you think of GW stores' Facebook pages? Do you think this is just an attempt by management to put some BS numbers in the next investor bulletin? (Look our stores got a gazillion likes on FB) Do you think that they serve a real function?

I am kind of perplexed, as the net is usually used as a form of advertising. However, we all know that GW does not advertise.

Er... My FLGS has a Facebook page. This is an easier way to reach the peoples about news and info.
As another user said elsewhere, they are a very powerful, useful and dangerous tool that GW (being afraid of Mr Internet and all) probably does not fully understand. All it takes is one (or more) rogue staffers to use their FB pages to spread muck about the company. They're on dangerous ground with it, more or less giving every member of staff the opportunity to cause PR havoc if they so wish.

GW stores' FB pages

It was explained to me this way:

Facebook is the new word of mouth.

Games Workshop does not advertise the traditional way. They sell a niche product for a small audience, so standard mass advertising tactics don't work.

If you like Warhammer, odds are your friends might be interested in it too.

When you "like" your local store's page, when the GW store makes a post it appears on your news feed. Thus, your friends might see it and get interested in Warhammer as well.

Makes sense to me.

GW stores' FB pages

I personally love my GW's facebook page. For one thing the info section has their hours, and since I go in infrequently, I can always check if they are open or not. The other great thing is I can ask the manager questions without going in. Like when they changed to the new paint pots, I asked him about them, and he answered pretty quickly. He also announces tournaments, special hours/closings, and puts up random pictures from games. For someone who goes there maybe once a month, it is a great window into what is going on there.
