Foundation paints question

I was washing one of my minis with water and wipped it gently with a napkin and nearly all of my dheneb stone came off. I then tried wipping another mini and it also rubbed right off. Other colours (like codex gray) can be scratched very strongly with a fingernail and they just won't come off.

Am I doing something wrong? Is dheneb stone crap? I have also used tallarn flesh and it seems pretty solid (tough I haven't been trying too hard because faces are hard to paint).

Some more info: All these minis are basecoated using GW black spray. The dheneb is coming off and showing the black under it. So it's NOT a primer issue.

Edit: a picture

Foundation paints question

You might have gotten a bad bottle of paint or the wash might have loosened the paint. I have never had issues with the foundation paints. It could be the primer not allowing it to adhere to the base coat. I never you GW spray paints, they are garbage imho.

Foundation paints question

Do you handle your minis a lot during painting or do you use a handle (like poster-tacking them to paint pot or pinning them to a wine cork)? Oils and other gunk on your hands can build up on surfaces, weakening or completely destroying paint adhesion.

Your problem might not be an issue with a particular color or pot of paint, but particular areas on the mini. Looking at the picture, it seems like you lost some blue and gold to the same sort of flaking, as well. If you truly did just rinse them and gently wipe, the adhesion would have to have been pretty terrible to get that sort of sharp-edged chipping.

I can't guarantee that this is your issue, but I'd recommend attaching your minis to handles of some sort and avoiding touching the models, themselves, during painting (at least, as much as practically possible).

Could it be I'm diluting it too much?

Foundation paints question

How long since the previous coat? If the paint isn't fully cured, it could be re-activated by water.

What additives do you use? Flo-Aid, Slo-Dri, and the like can make the paint take longer to cure.

Did you shake the paint thoroughly? Foundation paints settle alot, meaning you'd get more medium and less pigment, so a longer dry time.

How many coats did you apply? 1 thick coat? Several thinned coats? If several thinned, did you allow time to dry thoroughly between coats?
