Bloodletters like lava ~ Sorta?

Hi Again

Since i play with a few bloodletters in my army i wanted something to "PoP" with them. I searched through so many pictures to find something i liked so i could paint it similar but found nothing. I decided id paint some lava looking letters. The first 20 were painted great, the next 20.. well i got abit sick of painting so they arnt so great. I painted some with blue tongues and some with purple so i knew which unit was which.

Step 1.
Build your models.
No pics, sorry :(

Step 2.
Undercoat your models. I use the white spray from GW. It makes the colors more brighter.

Step 3.
Paint the whole model (Except the head!) in blazing orange.

Step 4.
Paint just the raised bits, shoulders, legs, arms etc in sunburst yellow.

Both pictures show the yellow, you want to leave some parts with the orange. You dont have to be so extreme with the yellow like i have you can just paint alittle with yellow. Different amounts of the yellow will change the final outcome of the models. it may give you a better look.

Step 5.
Where you have the blazing orange painted, you want to take a fine brush. Very fine brush. And paint in scab red little tiny lines along the recessed groves. If you work with washes(i do not) you might be able to simply use the baal red or brownish gryphone sepia washes in this step. But only paint in the orange parts!!!!
* in this pic, there is hardly any orange on my models. I stuffed up and painted to much yellow. But you can see the basic effect we are working towards*

Step 6.
From this stage you want to take your skull white and paint over the yellow parts. You can paint the spines of the letters anyway you wish in this stage, some i have painted with flames, some with just gradient color, some just plain white. I added some variety to them.

You also want to paint the heads yellow. You can do that in the yellow stage(step 4). But i paint them now so i know where i want my yellow and white to meet up around the neckline.

Step 7.
Now you want to coat the heads in white.
You also can paint your swords in this step. I gradiented my swords. Since they are hellblades i kinda wanted a fresh bright metal look out to a cool to touch black/red. You can paint them plain red with yellow lightning or blue or whatever color you want.

Step 8.
Basing your models.
Some great "lava" tutes are posted up on here ~ http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/396167.page
Its by a fellow dakka member and i have to say by far its one of the easiest to do! And seems quick to paint to.

Here are some of the finished pictures!
Some models havnt been based or had their swords painted. Eek, there heads arnt done either

I made a herald of khorne using the opposite of what i have shown you. You simply reverse the colors and go darker to lighter.

Whatever way you choose to paint them Lighter or Darker style, when they sit on the gaming table in chunks of 20, they definatly get noticed!

Note: i first started painting these per model, it would take me around 10-12 hours to paint each individual model this way. I DO NOT RECCOMEND DOING THAT!!!!! Batch style painting for this works better. I work with 5 models per batch. Im down to around 30 hours a batch maybe 35. But im a really new and super slow at painting. Most people should be able to paint a batch of 5 in around 10-15 hours, probably way less time tbh.

I'm not a fan. I liked where you were going for a while, but the amount of white is much too huge. I think you might get better results if the model ended up primarily darker colored. They don't really look like lava, they just look silly.

TBH the light ones don't look that great. You put too much white on and it doesn't look like lava. The darker herald looks really awesome though, like its actually made out of lava. You should use that scheme instead.

Re:Bloodletters like lava ~ Sorta?

After i painted 1 darker one.. i realised how hard it is to actually paint that. You want to keep going darker to lighter, not lighter to darker. Much more harder than you think. I wasnt happy with the plain white, I agree with it being to much, You can just highlight with the white on the dimple parts and what nots. I tried washes over them to dull the white then highlight with skull white but it doesnt look right. If i was able to get "badmoon yellow" i think it used to be called (the one lighter than sunburst) you could do that, or even use a different brand of brighter yellow.

Sorry some of you do not like them.

Its merly another option rather than boring traditional red with a red wash.
