Happy Hobby Memories.

'Sup dudes.

For no apparent reason, I'm feeling slightly nostalgic. It might be related to the Quest thread I started, but can't be sure.

Anyways, we've all been at some point or other NooBs. Now, most of us are grizzled veterans. Yet there is that bizarre gray area in between, a period of what was for me, a good couple of years. I'd been around the block once, and having started on Space Hulk and Tyranid Attack, my brother and I moved into Epic.

This was the heyday of my Hobby. Space Marine, Titan Legions, and most of the army expandsions were ours. I remember a particular Christmas. We were up in Scotland staying at Gran's. Being Christmas, ourr wallets were overflowing with cold, hard cash (very cold as it happens, being in a wallet in Scotland during winter). So we do what you'd expect two wide eyed rebels with a pocket full of cash and a new game to play...we head up the Royal Mile and spunk it all on Epic models! I couldn't tell you 100% what we bought, but we were fairly sensible. We took the unit cards with us, and made sure the purchases were paying off. On the way home, we managed to jump on the wrong bus, and wound up with a bit of a walk back to Gran's.

Ahh, cold fingers fumbling at blister packs, frantic wishing we'd grabbed the other Warhound Titan, with the Vulcan Megabolter and Plasma Blastgun, instead of the one with the Turbo Laser.

Quite a happy memory, and whenever the temprature drops suitably, I remember that, and get all nostalgic for Epic!

Walking past my old local GW in Peterborough on a sunny Saturday in 1992ish.... Seeing all those fresh faced kids having fun, the red shirts who really cared about the hobby and not the bottom line in sales. Wandering in and within minutes playing a demo game of 40k with another total noob and being taken through the game step by step, overwatch, throwing grenades, running, CC.
Back in 3rd edition. I'd 'played' through 2nd edition, but not much, as I didn't get much fun out of my brother and his friend repeatedly curb stomping me.

When 3rd rolled around and I started a new army - Salamanders, I also changed schools, and found someone who played at the new school. After we graduated, we spent the next few years playing 2-3 times a week, usually getting in 3 games each time.

Never had so much fun playing 40k.
I must have been about 14; it was probably 2005. Historicon has always had great fleamarkets, and while I'd bought 40k figures there before for my homebrew games, this time I got the 3rd ed starter set for about $20. In the 7 hour car ride back home, I pored through the rulebook just gushing over all the seemingly complex rules, awesome paintjobs, and incredible artwork. I didn't end up playing 40k proper until the Dark Angels codex came out, but whenever I look at that old rulebook, late 90s GW models, or am on exceptionally long car rides, I always think back to being a teenager, long car trips with my dad and a few buddies, and 40k.

The summer before, the two buddies who came along played a lot of my homebrew rules with me. We ended up playing an 8 hour long game, from 10pm til sunrise. It ended with my Marine standard bearer finally getting overrun by the hordes of fantasy orcs, lightly armed militia, and genestealers on top of the cardboard fortress my army was defending. My rules were horribly unbalanced, not well playtested, and about as well thought out as you'd expect from a freshman in highschool. Regardless, that still remains one of my favorite gaming memories. I miss being grown up and not having 3 months off to game with your buddies every summer.
