Also, what are some of the better 'historical' game systems on market? As for rules, you will be spoiled for choice. Gripping Beast just released Saga - which is a skirmish scale Viking game. I have not seen the rules, but first shipments to distributors sold out quickly.

Wahammer Ancients with the Shieldwall army book is (or was) a popular option. Depending on who plays in your area, you may also see Clash of Empire, or War and Conquest.

At the moment, I prefer Hail Caesar as a mass battle game. It's fast moving, easy to pickup & becoming quite popular if you follow various ancients blogs.
