Brand spanking new to Fantasy & WoC

Righty my fellow Dakkites.

I'm (Slowly) Being taught fantasy, and was given (YES GIVEN!) ~2000pts of WoC.

But I'm slightly stumped, my brain hasn't completely grasped how army lists work (25% of something has to be something unless something is something...) And "Ranks" (Putting 20 figures in 2x rows of 10, 4x Rows of 5 etc,).

I have 10 Marauder Horsemen, Now, Do I put them as 1 unit of 10? Or 2 of 5?
If I put them as 1 of 10, do I 1 Rank of 10? Or 2 Ranks of 5?

Note: I can split them into 5's as I have the bits to turn one into a Banner/Musician etc.

Also, sounds daft but if you can explain things in 40k terms (I know, daft) I may understand better (Thats how the GW manager was teaching me )

EDIT: 100th Post! I feel so grown up! [/Fireworks]

Each unit consists of x number of basic guys. Think of a tactical squad where x is the number of tactical marines you can include.

Each unit has three "character" options similar to the Sergeant of the tactical squad. Those options are the unit champion (Vet Sgt), musician (special rules for movement & combat resolution) and the standard bearer. You buy them separately and no one guy can fill multiple roles. None of these are mandatory although many people use at least the musician. When you use all three, it's called "full command" or FC for short.

40k is a skirmish game. You have guys wandering all over the place as long as they stay near someone of their unit. Fantasy is different in that everyone is tightly packed together for warmth during the cold, cold winters. Your Fantasy units are run in rows of guys. Each row is called a "rank". With infantry, you frequenty run 20-50 guys. You can run them wide or run them deep. Wide usually means 10 guys in each rank. This is called a horde. Special rule for that. Basically a horde is an offence style formation used when you want to get a lot of attacks in. Another tactic is to run the unit deep. This means your rank is usually no more than five or six guys and has many ranks to it. Having more ranks in your unit than your opponent has in his gives you "steadfast". That's another special rule. This formation is defensive and used when you want your unit to basically tie up your opponent over the course of several turns. The term is "tarpit" for (hopefully) obvious reasons.

Cavalry are usually put five wide. There are exceptions but don't worry about that now. You can have multiple ranks but that isn't done very often for cavalry (Bretonnians are the exception to this). Make multiple units of five for now until you decide if you need a second rank.

So, did that muddy the waters enough for you.

In the case you are asking about I would suggest 2 units of 5 horsemen. Give each the musician upgrade so they get the advantages of it and use them as you would scouts in 40k to attack your opponents war machines like cannons and catapults.
