How to kitbash High Elf Maiden Guard?

Good day everyone,

I would like to make a unit of High Elf Maiden Guard to go with my high elf army. I know they're not actually in the book, but I see no reason why they couldn't stand in for a unit of Phoenix Guard - the 4+ Ward save makes their armor irrelevant, and the original squad had polearms which could easily be called halberds.

I have two problems - the original metal models are rather expensive, because they are no longer produced. The second problem is I am not really familiar with the Games Workshop line of fantasy models, particularly the individual pieces, the relative scale of the models, and how many of what pieces come with anything.

So, after looking at the original models, which can be found on the link below, I'm at a loss of what to use. I first looked to the high elf archers, but the problem with that box is (best I can tell) they're all male. My next thought was the Wood Elf Glade Guard. This looks more promising - it looks as though there are female torsos, and a great number of the heads will be good as well. The aesthetic is not quite right, but I think with proper painting, maybe a little, little sculpting/cutting it will be good; plus, the original Maiden Guard models didn't look like high elves either. Can anyone offer any insight as to the suitability of the Glade Guard models, and/or let me know if there are female torsos, and how many per box? They don't show enough skin, but I see that being a problem everywhere, and is not a big deal to me. The next problem is where to get the halberds - optimally, I could just use the Phoenix Guard halberds, but I don't know if the scale would be off, or how many halberds would fit with the glade guard models.

Alternatively, if you happen to have the perfect solution, I'd love to hear it. Really, my only restriction is that the model needs to be substantially GW, because the local battle bunker is really my only place to play.

http://www.angelfire.com/extreme2/taintedminis/ELVES4.html

Thank you for any help or insights you can give me.

Had a bit of a search Dark Elf warriors could be an option as this would give you a female torso in armor, I think you get 4 female torsos per box (the same as the glade guard i think).

Dark Eldar Wyches maybe a starting point? not sure if they would be too spikey but you get 10 different bodies (six female variants and four male variants) which it looks like are all on the one spruesomewhere like http://bitzbarn.com might be helpful as you can order individual sprues or at the very least raid through a variety of pictures.

Really not sure how the scale / dimensions work out but sounds like an interesting project

I'd say just use the Phoenix Guard models.

Why?
The Maiden Guard wore full armor, yes?
Unless the armor is stylized to accentuate female form--you're not going to tell the difference.

How to kitbash High Elf Maiden Guard?

I took a look at the phoenix guard models, and Kan might be onto something, but I wouldn't just use them straight. Kind of defeats the purpose of a conversion now, doesn't it.

The phoenix guard models have a half torso along with the cloak. So you could use the phoenix guard models as a base, but replace the front of the torso with a female one. As mentioned, the dark elves have them, but I think they're solid torsos. Eldar from 40k have female half torsos. Wood elf waywatchers also have female torsos, again, not sure if solid pieces.

With some careful cutting, and some minor greenstuffing, you could likely easily add female torsos to the models. Judging from the poses, it also looks like that addition might not hurt the poses in the P-guard.

Then comes the heads. Easiest is to use the female waywatcher heads. Dark eldar female heads might also work, if you can find some with enough hair (the original models had big hair, or you could try a hand at greenstuffing them).

I think that the maiden guard also had spears, not halberds, so a simple snip and replace of the halberd head with a spear would be easy.

Bitz suppliers for most of the above should have plenty, and not that expensive, particularly the torsos.

If you stick with most of the P-guard, then the scale issues should go away with just the addition of heads and torso fronts.

Also, I'd suggest asking around your game group or local store to see if people can bring in their bitz to get a better sense of scale if possible.

Good luck and post pics. I'd like to see a more armored maiden guard.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Edit: I meant Glade Guard femae heads, not waywatcher.

Also, in looking at the heads on gws site, they'd be perfect because it looks like most of the female heads have that leather half face mask, which is similar to the maiden guard metal face guard. Some green stuff gems, something to make it look a little more angular, metal paint, and I think they'd be striking.

IIRC the Glade Guard box has 8 female torsos. They are full separate from the body, but they have a 'bubble' of sorts in the back where the cloak is supposed to go, so that will be a problem if you can't cover it up.

Did you see what the original maiden guard were wearing? Hardly what I'd call heavily armored.

You'd want to do some GSing on the torso anyway to add the high elf gems, armor plate, etc.

How to kitbash High Elf Maiden Guard?

I didn't say the original models were heavily armored.

However, they are considered to be wearing "heavy armor".

High Elves, being y'know fairly practical and seemingly prudish, don't seem like the type to make giant cupholder breastplates.

I still wouldn't use the Wood Elf or Eldar(Dark or not) torsos, simply because the amount of work to make them acceptable as High Elves is absurd.
