http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2011/oct/12/holder-subpoenaed-weapons-probe/

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, which has been investigating the Justice Department’s “Fast and Furious” weapons probe for several months, issued a new round of subpoenas Wednesday for documents involving key department officials, including Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. and his top deputies.

Committee Chairman Rep. Darrell Issa, California Republican, said the Justice Department top echelon officials “know more about Operation Fast and Furious than they have publicly acknowledged,” adding that the documents now being sought “will provide answers to questions that Justice officials have tried to avoid since this investigation began eight months ago.

“It’s time we know the whole truth,” he said.

The subpoenas are asking for all communications referring to the Fast and Furious operation and related cases, including “any Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) firearms trafficking case based in Phoenix, Arizona.

Named in the subpoenas, among others, are Mr. Holder; former Deputy Attorney General David Ogden; Gary Grindler, former acting deputy attorney general; Deputy Attorney General James Cole; Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer; and Assistant Attorney General Ronald Weich.

The subpoenas also seek all communications between Justice Department employees and Executive Office of the President.

At its best (ie not the view on progun forums which are considerably more conspiratorial) this is criminal incompetence that led to Mexican citizens and US citizens being killed. Bad things need to happen to the people who signed off on this, and its shifted into the Washington conspiracy mode (cover up is potentially more of a deal than the crime) except of course what happen actually resulted in people dying.

sarpedons-right-hand wrote:Being from over the pond, not sure what this is all about

The U.S. Government instructed gun stores to sell to criminals or straw buyers. The straw buyers then gave the guns to drug cartels and/or smuggled them across the border to Mexico. At that point the U.S. Government stopped caring where they went as they had no method of physically tracking the guns (they did record their serial numbers).

Eventually one of these guns was used to kill a U.S. border agent. Mexican officials has since found that these guns were used in at least 200 murders.

The administration (particularly Eric Holder, the attorney general) has denied any knowledge of the operation. Documents have shown that Mr. Holder received several emails about the operation.

I think that's about where it stands.

Pretty much.

The stated original intent of the program was track the weapons to cartels and then bust the cartel leaders. But, er...uh, the cartel leaders are in another country and for the love of god YOU'RE SHIPPING GUNS TO CARTELS WHO WILL USE THEM TO KILL PEOPLE.

Brian Terry.
I don't care what the political ramifications are. The person responsible for approving this operation should go on trial either FOR his murder or in an aiding and abieting role.

I have little doubt Gun Walker and Fast and the Furious were both designed to create a flash point for more anti gun legislation. It backfired and now someone needs to explain to the American people how exactly they thought this was a good idea.

and just for fun
