Why do Forge World use poisonous resin?

It's not that poisonous as such, you just should avoid generating dust.

Most resins of this nature are harmful to a degree. They couldn't produce the same stuff in plastic, the models are too specialised and would cost far too much. Resin is more cost effective for smaller production runs, the moulds are far far cheaper, which is why it's the choice of material for many smaller manufacturers. It also provides a high level of detail, when used properly.

There are plenty of good reasons, it's just silly to demand they make stuff in plastic or that they don't care about the harmful nature of products. Forgeworld is not for children, it's for adults with some modelling skill.

It won't ruin it, but it will make it really, really, really bendy.

A local gamer used boiling water for straightening the barrels on a Hydra Flak Tank and didn't think about it, so his barrels curved to match the bowl he'd left them in.

Why do Forge World use poisonous resin?

Well, if I did go with the "boiling" method, it would be on a flat surface pan. I know people have used the "boiling" method as a way of fixing warped models, so provided that the surface is flat, I see little concern in this case.

That being said, I've used the "boil method" on pewter models before, to get the glossy sheen off them, and it has worked perfectly for me. I tested it on pieces that would otherwise be useless, and saw no ill effects on them. I then went ahead and boiled all of my metal mini's, and they all came out fine.

With resin though, I've only experimented with once, and it was with a piece that was unnecessary as well. It was about the length of an Autocannon barrel, and when finished, I saw no immediate ill-effects either.

So to quickly summarize, I suppose boiling resin pieces wouldn't be harmful to the piece so long as they're boiled on a flat surface, and monitored closely.

Any further thoughts?

Why do Forge World use poisonous resin?

What you're referring to is actually the "common" way to fix warped models.

I usually do cleaning and bending together, as you don't need boiling water(in fact you do not WANT boiling water, as it makes the parts too pliable meaning you can actually damage the part whilst bending)--you just need hot tap water.

The mold release agent comes right off with soapy water. You just need to use dish soap rather than hand soap, and it does not hurt to give it time to soak.

I think a dose of skepticism with health warnings or the lack of them is a good thing. Remember once upon a time everyone thought it was a good idea to smoke, or that Asbesto's was the best material since Steel.

I think some things are obvious, like wearing a dust mask when drilling or cutting resin. Don't ingest anything that isn't edible and if in doubt the chemical is probably Carcinogenic, Flammable or Toxic or all three. If it's not natural, it's probably not good for you.

EDIT on the Edible point, sometimes unnatural edible things are bad for you.....I'm thinking tinned SPAM.
