Exhaust/dirt effects

Hey guys!

I'm starting to do a few vehicles, and I need some tips on how to do smudges close to tracks and exhaust residue like here: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Warhammer-40k-Blood-Angels-Baal-Predator-1-PAINTED-/150676160416?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2314ffbfa0

How do you get the smudges just above the tracks and smoke residue next to the vents on the sides?

Weathering powders.

I do not know your familiarity with these kinds of techniques or using weathering powders, but Forge World does have a kind of "Dummy's Guide" to using them which can be found here.

Their powders are not the highest quality ones on the market, but they definitely are not slouches either. If you're just starting out trying these techniques, I'd suggest using them before moving onto the other ones.

Re:Exhaust/dirt effects

Using careful drybrushing you can get what I think are pretty realistic dust effects. Zoom in on these and you can see where I tried to simulate dust kicked up by the wheels of the truck and tracks of the razorback:

Re:Exhaust/dirt effects

I think the fastest way, and that would provide the most control would be an airbrush. That is how I achieved the exhaust/weather effects on this drop pod;

weathering powders are great for smaller areas, but when dealing with large flat areas like a vehicle, you loose some of the ability to control the application and the effect.

Ashton

Exhaust/dirt effects

For smaller exhaust areas, you can stipple an exhaust effect on. Just take a flat drybrush and only dip the tip into the paint (dark gray, black). The apply by only pressing the flat tip of the brush in a 90° angle onto the surface. This will create an uneven pattern, which will look like exhaust dirt, specially when you use different shades of dark gray and black.

Cheers,

IK-Painter
