Playing 40K as an extended campaign with multiple players-

For my regular gaming group, we get maybe one night every two weeks to indulge in our geekdom. For a while, tabletop RPGs dominated our geek nights, but lately, 40k has stepped to the forefront. For some of us, it's great, but for those of us who enjoy the continuity of an RPG and all its trappings, level advancement, story progression, a connection to the game world, are looking for something that just isn't there. Or is it?

Using the Dawn of War video games as inspiration, a couple of us decided to try and engineer a system revolving around requisition/strategic points, and a world map to develop something that combines 40K, Risk, and the individualized character aspect of an RPG. Before I get too deep in inventing rules and systems, I was wondering if anyone out there has already taken a stab at something like this; and if not, maybe we can develop something fun as a group effort?

Ideally it would be a turn based game with a territorial scoring system like risk, with the exception that conflicts would be resolved on the 40K table. We'd need to accomodate for mismatched battles between armies of different sizes, and add an element that rewarded long strategy as well a savvy table skills. Something that can be run during the week via e-mails to a central game master, simple stuff like troop movements and army building, and then resolving turns once a week on the battlefield.

What I envision is a 4-5 player game where everyone begins with a small force and a unique HQ. The first few turs would involve planning, expansion, and development, and once armies started running into occupied territories, the fights would start... etc. Anyone in?

Playing 40K as an extended campaign with multiple players-

Obvious comment, gw have already released something for exactly that type of campaign,
so either
1) buy the w40k planetary empires expansion, it you want tiles/ official system for that type of campaign,

or

2) adapt the FREE mighty empires rules (games workshops site > warhammer > gaming articles ), from warhammer to 40k.
(cheapest option, use standard equivalence for race bonuses ie high elves -> eldar, tomb kings -> necron, etc)
