tiered marks for chaos units

For starters do away with icons. They are marked or not. Second make them profile modifications like twolves. So you have the ability to buy tiered levels of marks. First tier nurgle is t 5 second tier is fnp bit lose an init. Khorne is add an attack then add a ws and furious charge but lose Med and long range weapons. Each second tier mark would have some drawback. What do you think?

I like this actually. Now mind you, I don't play chaos. Maybe a renaming of the tiers would be in order for clarity?

For example, the lowest tier could be Mark of Nurgle which gives the T5, but Favored of Nurgle gives FNP and the loss of 1 init as well as the benefits of Mark of Nurgle.

Re:tiered marks for chaos units

I have to agree, without putting much thought into it... It sounds like a great idea.

However...

GW won't likely move in this direction. It would be fine for a home game, but GW is moving away from things like this (insert 5th edition tyranid codex here). While you might see one or two abilities like this pop up per codex having ~10 options is a bit of an overkill.

Re:tiered marks for chaos units

Well I was looking at the grey knights and to a lesser extent the dark eldar book and they have many things show things being defined in a tiered direction. For example Different ranks of FNP, Different levels of psychic mastery. I was thinking something like MON(1),(2) so on and so forth. Could be broken down and maybe thrown on a page with all the god specific wargear we should have, or the page for the death guard legion. Same for all the other legions. Maybe mark of chaos undivided rank one is re-roll morale tests. Slannesh would be +1 init, no idea for the second one and tzeench would be 5+ wardsave(or +1 for everyone else) and then relentless but slow and purposeful(not sure how to make it work on bikes). Each of the specific units would still keep some unique things about themselves as well as fearless but would allow for selection of other units to fit the theme of the army.

Herer is what I am thinking for each one, including Undivided.

It works like Mark of [random] Lvl 1/2/3. Lvl 1 works exactly the same as they current ones. Lvl 2 is only availible to Unit Champions, Lords, Sorcerors, and DP. LVL 3 is for Lords and DP. Certain named characters such as Kharn and Typhus have Lvl 4. Each Lvl incorperates the previous one. So, a Lvl 2 Khorne Lord has +1 attack, and the second Lvl bonus. The only way to get a Lvl 2 is to upgrade a lvl 1, and similar.

Mark of Khorne
Lvl 2

This grants the owner Furious Charge and +1WS, but causes the model Rage. If a upgrade Character is taken, then he may ignore Rage that turn by rolling 4+ at the befginning of its movement phase, but if he fails, then the whole unit gains rage.

Lvl 3
The owner gains +D6 attacks, or +2D6 when wielding a Blood Feeder, but all misses in CC are counted as hits on the unit. The owner and any models in the same unit gain Rage permanently.

Mark of Khorne's Champion/Lvl 4(Kharn the Betrayer only)

Grabnts the same effect as Blood Talons. Each successful wound allows him another attack.

Mark of Nurgle
Lvl 2
Grants FNP to owner, but they lose 1 Int. They have now got poisoned(4+) attacks.

LvL 3
This cause the owner to become Slow and Purposeful, but grants him Poisoned (3+) attacks. Poisoned Weapons now wound him on -1 than normal, so 4+ would become 5+.

Mark of Nurgle's Plaguechild/lvl 4(Typhus only)

The Bearer now has Poisoned 2+ attacks, and is immune to Poisoned Weapons. FNP may be taken even if hit by an AP 1 or 2 weapon, though other restrictions apply. However, they must move in the movement phase and lose Relentless.

Mark of Slaanesh's Painmaster (Lucius and Fabius Bile only)

The bearer gains +2 Int, but must reduce his armour save by 1. They like the pain the lighter armour brings.

Mark of Chaos Undivided lvl 1.

Models with this, and any other models in their unit, may reroll all failed Morale and Pinning Tests.

Lvl 2

The unit gains Stubborn, and +1 Ld.
How about a normal mark and a favored mark?
A normal mark to show that the marine is dedicated to that patron.
A favored mark to show that the god has recognized his dedication and has provided him with some basic "dark powers".
Then I guess you can have the Chosen of X marks like what Kharne, typhus and others have.
I was just suggesting that way as as a simpler way to remember what each tier does they could have further specifications however rules wise they would be the psyker levels. I like the psyker levels because it creates a standard rule for everyone who can use multiple powers per turn.

This is the sort of things that added flavour to the CSM Codex before it was absolutely nerfed to the extreme. These are good rules, and could even be expanded into something similar to the Chaos Books that were in the older 'Dex (you could only dedicate yourself to one Book of Chaos, which opened up Cult units, extra Psychic Powers, etc).
