I had a corporate job that took up all of my free time and really prefer to play with painted minis, so I paid some dude from the LGS to paint them up. Thing is, lists aren't static enough in Warmachine to make this
an easy process. The commissions I've seen done are mostly
based around collections. If they're based around a single list, it's
because it's targeted for a very specific event in the foreseeable
future like Adepticon, where people knew they needed x points

However, in the OP I mentioned that the local scene dont tend to paint their own minis... for whatever reasons... but due to tourney requirements, in order to attend they must begin to.

I will be doing the painting. Standard will be Tabletop+, which more than most of the local scene can manage or are willing to do.

So, I would personally prefer to paint my own.

I know that my trolls have been sitting here without ANY paint for the past few months, so my store's journeyman league has gotten me to paint (as its worth just as much, if not more points than games). Try it in your local scene, perhaps have a tourney at the end of the league with a paint requirement... that way people make the attempt to paint.. Or give out a mini painting award... some incentive to get them to paint.

I think it would be better to have stuff ready to go, like a Winter Guard Death Star or full units of Bane Knights. From a player perspective, it becomes a convenience. In my local group, there's a couple of guys that are always hustling to paint someone else's stuff. They'd probably do better having the painted stuff to sell. Just my thoughts.

In my (limited) experience that 3 months is spent playing and tweeking that list (or lists) before an event and the composition can change due to playtesting and personal play style. As said above, I have seen very few static lists, they change up constantly.

Easy to do when you're running 35-50 points and have a calculator.

There aren't the countless unit options 40K has: Units come in either 1 size or 2 possible sizes, and then they either have a UA/WA option or they don't.

Seriously, it takes less than 2 minutes to check someone's ability to add up to 35 or 50(plus Jack/Beast points).

At the big events they check lists throughout the event by
having players fill out two lists.

Sometimes I even hover tables and perform a model count
(caught one or two accidental extras here and there that
