Is the starter box worth the cash?

I'm a 40k player trying to start up a warmachine army.
There's a boxed set at my FLC that comes with 20 pts (?) worth of two factions; the defenders of something or other and something else.
If my vague descprition allows you to recognize what I'm talking about, would you say that the majority of units supplied in this boxed set are actually worth feilding?
I know there's about $200 worth of models for $100, and it sounds like a good deal, but id rather not spend the cash on stuff I'm not going to field.
It's not like the faction specific warjacks can be used for both armies right?

are you getting into it yourself or with a friend? either way the box is a good buy, even if you sell off one of the factions and keep the other. both of the armies are decent, however i have always thought kreoss was better than sorscha in the battlebox environment. others will tell you different i am sure.

if you go in with a friend see if they want the other half. i am a khador player, both the khador jacks are good, i like juggernauts, they are cheap, have loads of armor and can dish it out in combat. the MOW shocktroopers are slow, but hard to kill, and can shoot or charge for decent damage.

They are a great buy for the amount of money you are putting out. And you get a rulebook and some other little goodies in it, too.

As for your question if you will or will not use the contents that is up to you. Both heavy infantry units tend to be slow. So you probably want a caster that speeds them up and neither of the casters included do that. I bought the battle box and am working on building lists that would be competitive (maybe not tourny worthy) based on the models in the box. I am adding some units to each and switching out the caster.

Even if you're spending the 50USD for *just* the 'caster and
heavy warjacks, you're coming out ahead. And if it turns out
you're not a fan of the 'jacks, don't build them right away and
see if you want the character warjacks instead. As of now, you
can build the following 'jacks with the stuff in the starter kit.

Crusader > Blood of Martyrs (if you plan on playing Thyra, do this!)
Vanquisher > Scourge of Heresy (not sure if this is any good)
Destroyer > Black Ivan (for Harkevitch)

There's nothing you can do with the Juggernaut yet...

Re:Is the starter box worth the cash?

The Menoth side is $145 retail, the Khador side is another $125 so it's about $260 in models not including the rulebook and other bits. For the heavy warjacks on both sides, definitely magnetize the chassis so character upgrades or other chassis variants are as easy as swapping out the head and arms.

The Menoth Cinerators aren't seen as often in their lists, but they are a pretty solid unit, especially in objective scenario settings. They're brutal in combat and solid as a rock. Toss Kreoss's Defender's Ward spell on them and they're practically immovable without serious resource dedication. To upgrade the Menoth army to a proper 25pt list is as easy as adding two units every Protectorate list takes: The Book (Covenant of Menoth) and a minimal unit of The Choir.

The Khador Man-of-Wars are just as beefy and are definitely seen in various lists. Most tournament-level Khador lists spend their infantry points on a Winter Guard death star, and with good reason, but this is not a must and can get tiresome of playing as and against over time. Even still, you can make a very solid list including the Shocktroopers. They can likewise sit on an objective and laugh off paltry attempts to move them; with Shieldwall up they have more armor than their heavy jacks!

So I guess the point is that in either army you can choose to use every part of the list and still come out with a solid army that will do well and really help teach you the game and certain aspects of each army. There is always room for growth and expansion via different warcasters, different units, or even different factions but the two player box is a good minimal investment to try it out.

Re:Is the starter box worth the cash?

Hey there,
Fellow Warmachines noob who got the starter box for the same reasons! Everything in the Starterbox seems (from playtesting a little) pretty good, and everyone more experienced seems to say so as well. I was looking at expanding the armies to 35 points, for regular sized games, and it really is awesome the variety of good lists you can make from the two armies even with the core being the starter boxes (though I did switch the PoM Repenter for a Vigilant, cause I liked the model and idea better). I'm probably going to get a full 10-man lighter unit for both sides, maybe another warjack for khador (khodiak and Berserker look neat), and viola! Two regular game-sized armies, for under $300! I wish I could do that with 40k!

Oh, and if you are like me, with a LGS nowhere within an hour, ebay for $76 was pretty sweet.

I am in the process of painting the 2 player set for a commission and my other half couldn't believe that you effectively get the Cinerators, Man-o-wars and rule book for free as the set costs the same as 2 battleboxes.

I can not say anything for how good the 2 20 lists are though as I know nothing about the 2 factions in the box.

Thanks guys. I'll but the box for sure!
I'm looking forward to this new game because it seems similar to 40k, yet it looks like it's way easier to roll what you need.
I'll be sure to have more posts up in the future as I'll have many questions.

Yes Baxx, it does seem different. It would seem a Major benefit would be not having to deal with the many problems GW seems to ignore, such as inconsistencies between Army Books and the Rule book, and the simple fact that they never supply you with enough guns, CCWs, etc. in their expensive sets.

After seeing just a few games played, I noticed that there were almost no arguments over rule interpertations, and the model look effing cool
