Here's the list of changes:
- New blog on homepage will pull in at least one interesting item of content per hour from the gallery or forums, as well as allowing specific news posts and promotion of anything we want to promote.
- On the left of every post, under the avatar and text there, is a 'filter thread' link. Click that and only posts by that user in this thread will be shown, hiding everything else. Great for catching up on those 100 page project logs without having to read hundreds of comments praising the work.
- It is not linked in elsewhere yet, but you can see the most exalted posts at: http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/jforum.page?module=posts&action=listExalted
- New appearance (duh!). If you really hate it, you can switch theme to dakka classic to go back to how things were, but this is really a better theme in almost every way. Your hate might just be muscle memory annoying you, so take the time to be patient and learn the new layout.
- New appearance is the default on mobile devices now.
- Gallery home page is much more interesting, go check it out.
- PMs with no subject are now readable.

And some minor stuff:
- flag detection a little bit more accurate (99.9%)

edit: minor update done, drop down menus now working as they should be.

It is a bit bunched up, but there are a few reasons for that. First, there are a few new sections we want to add in the future which will need the space, second by pushing it into one area, there is a consistent experience across every variation of browser and screen size, making it less annoying for those of us who hop around multiple devices. I wont rule out changing the spacing, there are a lot of hidden mod and admin links up there as well which take up a lot of space so might have reduced the relative compactness for us when we were reviewing it.

The gallery homepage needs a lot of tweaking still, but version 1 is fun enough. On a side note, would it be possible to add to the "More Interesting Searches" in the gallery "Uploaded (newest to oldest)" as it use to default to be. MasterSlowPoke, do you see red drop down menus? My subscribed threads is under the 'thread tools' one. If you dont see them, what browser are you using? I think that they might not be displaying properly in chrome right now. I like the new theme better, but it doesn't play nice with text zooming (results in horizontal scrollbars).. and my eyesight isn't perfect, so it's back to the old one for now.

Only thing I really miss about the old theme is that nice pale yellow text, was much easier on the eye and warmer.

Home page layout is the lesser of a range of evils. Wider screens are not optimal, but it will fit any device you care to use a lot more comfortably now. Both extremely wide resolutions and mobile devices have a roughly equal usage level here on dakka, but mobile is increasing faster than big screen so that was part of the justification for the change. Before it was a half-assed interface to the rest of dakka with a nice layout, now it is a great interface to the rest of dakka with a less attractive but more blog-ish layout. To answer a few points -

- gif's tend to lag a bit on wireless devices like tablets and smartphones, they should do ok on a laptop or desktop though, at least once they are buffered -

- The colors of 'reading areas' are largely untouched, this was done on purpose to avoid change shock. That being said, the color scheme can appear drastically different on different monitors as with any content. We optimized to the largest spread, but you may be one of the few unlucky where the contrast of your screen just doesn't cut it and will make things appear much harsher to you than everyone else. If you happen not to like it, instead of banging your head on the wall and lamenting life itself, you can always go back to the old comfortably Dakka you always liked by switching themes lol -

Finally, for those that don't realize it, this new design is meant to be 'new-retro'... The logo and coloring harken back to the original Dakka explosion logo, which I am sure most would agree was more distinctive and recognizable from afar than what I called the 'rusty license plate' logo of the most recent site skin. The menu bar has been retooled to optimize it across emerging media like smart phones and tablets. There is some empty space to the right of the menu (which I would have liked to fill and thin out the bar) but there are actually a great deal of controls only seen by mods and even more by admins that are actually occupying some of these areas. So unfortunately, the real estate is spoken for.

All in all, we didn't deviate much from the actual core of the previous template. Most things are where they used to be, most areas used for reading are unmodified, most buttons are the same shape and location. We really tried to keep things familiar and comfortable while still taking steps to upgrade the production values present. I am pretty proud to see that for the most part, the graphics seem to have been welcomed by the vast majority and the switch is seen generally as a positive step. Believe it or not, there was quite a bit of work involved for me so it is a bit of a relief that it has gone well lol!

I personally feel that the work Lego did with the auto-blog and gallery are spectacular. Make sure to go to the home page once in a while guys, there is always a great deal of new content to see now and it has quickly become a favorite part of my 'check dakka' routine! The gallery page update is also fantastic imo for similar reasons, such an easy and quick way to get the best recent images Dakka can offer without too much work.

I always knew the new look would not please everyone, but again, it has been very rewarding to go through these pages and know it was worth the work.

In addition to my previous comment in this thread about the lack of quick click common tags for the Gallery, I just realized that the view where one could see the newest images uploaded to the Gallery as they came in is gone. This means new images are unlikely to be seen or get any votes unless people do what appears to be a common trick already, vote on their own images with a 10 and 10 vote just to get it to the front page so others will see it and vote on it.

So I would suggest two additions to the new format, which are really old ones I think are worth saving. Have a small list of the common image tags off to one side to replace the large page of tags that used to show and have a link to a page view that shows the newest images as they are uploaded. That said, I really prefer the old color scheme. It has a nice palette that went well together. I don't intend any offense but this new one to me just went for cheap looking flashyness with all the different metal patterns all over the place. I also prefer the old rusty logo rather than the explosion one but maybe that is just me too.

There will be an inevitable slow crawl to perfection as tiny tweaks are made over time. Aside from looking nicer (in my opinion), this new theme offers a huge amount of scope for expansion whereas the other one was basically full. The drop down links are a necessary evil, but after a week or two you will lose your muscle memory and it wont bother you at all. I find those links easier to click on my phone and ipad because they are larger than they used to be.

With the new theme, we are free to add loads of new features and we intend to do so as time goes on.
