Alternative Plastic Sisters of Battle Blog - A work in progress

The following is a copy and paste of my endeavours so far. I had been running this blog on my local wargaming club's forum and have decided to move over to dakka!

"A while back i put together a witch hunter army. Since the new sisters and grey knightcodex i have had to either move over to grey knights or fully commit to a sisters force. I have chosen the sisters. My reading of the codex seems to indicate that you need a pretty troop heavy army to even start to be competetive.

At current GW prices this is not a possible to do without selling multiple organs.

I will use this space to show images of current conversions, chuck around ideas and welcome constructive criticism.

Hope people enjoy/give advice" - September 2011

Automatically Appended Next Post:
"The basis of the sisters are "Viridians" from the void game by scotia grendel. They are 10 for £5 and even cheaper if your lucky onb Ebay. Here is an image.

As you can see they are power armoured and space marine-esque. They are skinnier as well which works pretty well.
They dont have any backpacks however. I therefore began using the old fashioned backpacks from 2nd ed 40k. Dave donated a load to the cause and i found some in my shed (any more that people can sell or just want to get rid of please PM me ! ). The backpacks are less bulky than the newer SM kind and slighly more effeminate. heres a pic of one:

I have combined the above with eldar and dark eldar wych heads from ebay and my bitz box.

Anyways without further postponing here is the first shots at creating my sisters. (the ones with sheilds may be celestians)

I have made about 10 so far but the photos came out poo and its too late to faff around trying to do new ones.

I am using miliput...i will prob be using green stuff when the bank balance is looking a bit more healthy. I have added a bit of a bust to the armour, edited some weapons to be meltas/flamers and sculpted new hair for most of the girls.
The scale has made them bigger than the current sister models but smaller than space marines. Tbh with the scale creep over the past ten years i reckon if GW brought out the sisters today they would be about this tall.

The last sisters' fleur de lys is a bit wonky, this will get edited as and when i can be bothered!

All of the sisters have had their shoulder pads repositioned from their original viridian models to make them look a tad more like the ones in GW fluff.

All in all im quite happy with the results so far. They look a bit chunkier than the sisters in the fluff and artwork but when you consider i am averaging at about just under a pound per model i think its a pretty worthwhile venture!

Any coments/ advice welcomed!"

- 20th September 2011

Automatically Appended Next Post:
"Hello all, i am still around and managed to squeeze a couple more hours into this project over the week so far. Here is the fruit of my labour!

- As you can see i have been experimenting with poses.

A massive shout out to dave p, you kindly donated backpacks have alowed me to finish my first sister squad and celestian squad!!!

The Sisters

The Celestians

PS: The next step is painting, my weakest part of the hobby. (yes even worse then my playing :p) i want them to be bright red with gold details. Any blood angel fans or experienced painters care to share a tutorial that will give good results without needing a first in fine art ?"

- 5th October 2011

I liek the idea, and I like what you did, looks like a good start. Curious to see how they'd look with some paint on!

For the gold, consider bronze. better coverage then gold, ogryn flesh wash over it, and presto, lookin' good

Merci beaucoup Khaine! I have actually started painting one or two girls already. I have used a gold paint from GW and have found it a real bugger to use. It just seems to be so watery. Has anyone else had this issue? It has worked but takes a few coats to get a good cover. I do love the Ogryn flesh wash, i have used this in the past to make my ork's equipment look a tad rusty and old. I have used a devlan mud wash on this lot for now as it was all I had to hand.

I tell you what ill post some pics up in a minute, but go easy on me Dakka Dakka! I do not claim to be a great painter haha!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
SIster Superior with Plasma Pistol:

(needs another wash on the pipes on the backpack)

A bog standard battle sister. ( i went over the top wiv orange highlights on this one, doesn't look as red as id like)

Re:Alternative Plastic Sisters of Battle Blog - A work in progress

I think you're off to a nice start, but I also think you're attempting a bit much . OSL for example, is quite an advanced technique. I like where you're goig but I'm going to quote Mike McVey here: it's better to have a nice, basic paintjob then a full-blown technical manual gone wrong. I think you attempted a lot of techniques at the same time, which detracts from the basic mini. Which I like for the record, In just think you may be pushing yourself a tad hard. The heads and all the parts blend beautifully into the models, so I'd consider focussing on a well done absic paintjob rather then the special effects. Push yourself one thing at a time, and master it.

Hope I didn't sound too harsh, but I think these minis are very promising and I want to see ttheir full potential!
