How to find a job in the hobby (??)

Hey All,

We all have heard the adage, do what you love, and I think nearly all of us love war gaming in some form or another. As a recent college grad I am in the workforce with seemingly no opportunities that I was promised in school. I should have been an engineer. Having two degrees in the humanities however has left me with the ability to communicate and not get a job that people are hiring for. While I am hopeful that this might change in the future I figure that it might be fun to get a job where I get to work with people who share some of the same likes that I do.

At this point I am sure that you are slowly becoming more irate about how vague and insubstantial this post is, let me clarify further. My degrees are in English and Anthropology from the University of Wyoming. I got decent grades in school, but nothing to write home about (3.3 GPA). Currently I live in CO but would be willing to relocate to other parts of the US. I have looked at some of the websites such as GW and PP for openings but at least GW doesn't seem to be very responsive (and the minute I became a red shirt I would be hated incessantly).

So for those people who have made it, who have actual careers where they make more than $8/hr (yes my standards of making it are quite low at this point), feel free to comment or to provide me with some advice for getting an actual career. For those of you that have worked in some way for the war gaming industry, let me know your thoughts as a good place to get a job and such.

Thanks,
Luke

How to find a job in the hobby (??)

Well with a degree in English the most likely position would probably be background writer. I think BL has a competition each year where you send in short stories or something, I haven't really looked into it. Though the best way to go about it would be to probably get yourself known by writing a bit and distributing it.

I'd say don't hold your breath and try to go for something smaller while you work towards it.

Get a teaching degree, Humanities has few openings and always has and english has offered less and less for half a century. As an alternative learn a few more languages and become some sort of translator.

How to find a job in the hobby (??)

What does your hobby resume look like? What is your skill set for the gaming industry?

Can you sell? Do you write (if so, you should have samples on line to show an employer). Do you sculpt or paint?

As for "do what you love" that's just BS. If work was fun, they would not pay you for it.

Re:How to find a job in the hobby (??)

@ranthecid:

Well if doing what you like is bs then I should have been an engineer. dangit.

My hobby resume is rather lackluster, I know most of the systems of wargaming, I am an average painter, a below average sculptor, but I sell things above average. The problem with me selling stuff is that I don't have any sort of moral vacuum, I highly dislike selling things to people that I believe is an inferior product.

As far as writing goes, I really haven't delved into writing any sort of fan fiction, maybe I should give that a shot. Most of the writing that I have done has been academic in nature, although I do have an article in the pipeline to be published in an anthropology journal soon.

Thanks,
Luke

Sounds like you could work retail at a game store - not sure if you would break $8/hr or not. Most sales in a retail shop are not about pushing bad products- its about education and promotion. If you can be excited about it, your customers will be excited about it.
