Hey guys ive been playing 40k for about 2 years now. ive only ever ( until just recently ) played with my small group of 3 friends. i started playing against other people and i seem to get my butt stomped pretty hard against everyone who is not in my close knit of friends. i was talking to some of them and they were saying that i never really learnd how to play seeing as ive been playing against the same BA , CSM , and orks guys for the past 2 years. so i was wondering. what are some general 40k tactics that are used army wide ( i play space marines so anything more directed to that would be great )

Well firstly how many points do you play - what does your army compose of... What do you find you lose at - is it being tabled, objectives etc?

How do you prefer to play your SM? Are you a gunline, mecvh, assault etc.

One of the key thing in 40k is to make your opponent react to you - forcing pressure upon them is key in everything in 40k.

Google "bell of lost souls space curves tactics" and start with the articles on deployment.

Then google "fritz tactics space marines" and check out the specifics on space marines on Fritz's Way of Saim Hainn blog (some text, some video).

That should get you started and make it possible for you to beat your regular opponents every time.

General 40k tactics help?

The first piece of advice I give to everyone, but particularly stress in my Tau players, is this: Locate the piece of your opponant's army that will do the most amount of damage to you in the least amount of time. Remove its ability to do damage, then move onto the next most lethal thing.

Naturally this advice assumes some type of heavy shooting phase, but if you plan for this it will help shape your movement phase as well.

The correllary is to manuver or fire or assault in such a way so as to ammeliorate the return damage if your strike was not effective enough. IE: I only have enough firepower to make those two longfang squads combat ineffective, but the rest of the army will be able to tag my heavy hitters. Answer: manuver around terrain to give you LOS to those two units and concentrate fire.

The situation you are in is the reason I attend tournaments, and make an effort to get to events in KCMO or Topeka rather than just staying in Lawrence. Incest breeds a weakness in tactics, and so therefore I try to avoid playing only one small group of people if I can help it in order to keep my skills on top.

The exciting thing though is in a small group even one guy learning a new thing can cause a paradigm shift for the whole group.

I like that.

I saw some videos on you tube "40k Tactics" ....

Good idea is to make up 1 or 2 targets at a time, and once they are dead, move on to the next. Use your armies specual abilities to illiminate the "Gamble" factor, and play what works for each unit against each unit. When fielding your army, make you units extra good at there roles but do not make them universally useful. A Jack of All Trades is a Master of None. Also, try things that are less obvious, if everyone seams to build an army to couter a general type of army, make an army that is not typical or pradictable.
