What is the best way to start cheap Ogres?

Okay, so I have decided I will really try to like fantasy. After playing VC and hating it and currently playing WoC with it not really meshing, I have decided that WoC really isn't the army for me. So I go out to look for something new.

What I want is something that is a small, elite army that can both deal and take damage, preforms in all 3 "battle" phases of the game (Magic, Shooting and Combat), and that has many types of units.
Ogres, from what I can see, fit the bill.

Now, I know very little about the ogres, but I am looking for a small army that has a little bit of everything. Monsters, Guns and Melee. Other than that, the only problem is price, which needs to be kept low. Any suggestions?

2 battalion boxes, with a bit of conversion work to make the butchers, bruisers, and tyrant, will give you @1500 points.... more if you can find the old battalion boxes with the gnoblars in.

And then it's a matter of adding the specials and rares that you want.

What is the best way to start cheap Ogres?

I suggest checking ebay.

I got some crazy deal for used ogres.

Even if you buy them new they are still way cheaper even with shipping than buying from gw.

Suggestions some Ironguts, a unit of leadbelchers ( I run 5 or 6 they get the job done), Bulls those guys are useful mournfangs are awesome! Saber tusks are pretty good you could use chaos hounds as them same base about same size and chaos hounds look more mean.
Ironblasters are where its at they are great to have.

Like any army a bsb is needed especially with ogres low ld.

I would suggest get your hands on a good mix of Ironguts and bulls then you can convert some characters as in butcher slaughter master bsb tyrant if you want one.

1 warning for you after getting used to how tough and killy warriors were it was a little hard at first to get used to ogres because they are low initiative and ws.
The upside is impact hits and stomps.

Ogres also rely more on buff magic a lot like vc but unlike woc so just a heads up for that that was a little curve ball more me, ogres need to be buffed by magic.

But ya as I said ebay check for cheap deals unless you want new models in which case ebay might still be cheaper than a lot of places.

Re:What is the best way to start cheap Ogres?

With E-bay/battalions you can build up a disturbingly large army for very little cash.

The Ogre Battalion is the best value of any of the Battalions for a couple of reasons.

1) You save money big time, and to boot it doesn't have any trash models(a major problem for most of GWs package deals) its a $140 value for $105.

2) The models don't have to be assembled as what the box says. All plastic ogres have the same body, just with different sprues. The box actually has enough parts to make 8 Ironguts(if you don't make 2 of something else like the Leadbeltchers or Bulls)

3) Ogre characters can easily be kitbashed from a regular Ogre body and all the extra bits you will have.

I would reccomend 2 battalions, 2 boxs of Mournfang Cavelry(one unit of 4), a Firebelly, a Butcher/slaughtermaster kit, 2 packs of Sabretusks, and 2 ironblasters. then free choice of a Stonehorn or Thundertusk.

With these things you can make.

4 Mournfangs with Ironfists, Heavy armor, Dragonhide banner, and bellower

Slaughtermaster(general)

Bruiser BSB(make him out of a ogre from one of the battalions, use the extra IG bits to make him stand out. HA, fancy banner...)

Firebelly

Butcher(again, make him out of the battalion. Use the extra bits like racks of meat and an extra skull banner to make him stand out)

12 Bulls with ironfists and full command.

12 ironguts with full command.

4 Sabretusks

6 Leadbeltchers(the missing 2 bodies became your Butcher and BSB)

2 ironblasters

and then a Stonehorn or Thundertusk

This comes to just under 2800 points without any magic items or character upgrades.

new from GW, this will cost you $515.25. This doesn't include the army book($41.25)

If you go on E-bay and hunt for deals the price could come way down. heck if you find some really good deals you might skip the battalions entirely and just get all your Bulls, Ironguts, and Leadbeltchers that way and use the saved money to get more stuff.
