Grot units, worth it?

I'm really into the all out Ork infantry assault, but is a grit unit worth it? I love the idea of having a 30 strong mob and it also allows for points to be spent on PKs for my nobz.

Thoughts?

I never liked the thought of using Grots, if you want an all out infantry horde for assault, than just get boyz

Grot units, worth it?

They can be used for cheap screens for much, much more important units. Screening lootas with them is an often used tactic. Or if you don't like Kan wall you can attempt to do a similar tactic with a string of grots in from of your horde.

30 strong is too much for such a throwaway unit in my opinion though. Go for 19 or at least 29 so you don't have to spring for another runtherd (You need 1 per 10 grots). They do not have combat utility. At all. You want combat, pay three more points for more boyz, and if you can't afford powerklaws make sacrifices to get them in other ways, because you need them.

Re:Grot units, worth it?

I would only use them to hold objectives far back in your territory.

That Toughness 2 and no armor means they die even to lasguns if they are out of cover. There's no comparison to a real ork unit, even with 30 gretchin.

I like to use a 10-grot-with-herder unit for minimum points that are only there to come in from reserve and take objectives in my deployment zone while the REAL boyz do the krumpin' up front.

Grot units, worth it?

10 + herder, placed in Reserve and used to come on late game and grab objectives is very common, and cheap as chips.

Using big squads to screen/give cover saves is less common, because a mek with KFF can cover most of your army and doesn't force your mainline units to deploy behind it.

Just have them go to ground every time they are shot at.

If your playing a KP mission, they make a good screen, and can be used to absorb the assault of a deathstar.

Grot units, worth it?

They are pretty good when you use them as walking cover. a unit of 19 will be plenty of grots to do this. It will force your opponents to either waste shooting at grots, or shooting at your boyz with 4+ cover save. Either way its a win win situation for you.
