Cutting Class

A close friend of mine has been cutting class lately. He has a more or less bogus schedule, and he doesn't feel the need to go to classes he doesn't need to graduate. He's doing well in all the classes he actually needs, but he has <30% in all the classes he cuts (or just plain old refuses to work in).

How can I convince him to suck it up and go to all his classes? Is it even worth convincing him that he's making a mistake? It's his senior year, by the way. In a public school. He usually just goes to the public library to fiddle around, which honestly could be worse. I have no idea what his plans are after school, but he seems to be set on joining the army (which I suspect he's piggybacking of my Navy plans), but I don't think he really has the mettle to be in the army if he can't even show up to class...

I have one or two classes that I feel the same about, but I just slack off, I don't skip it. What are your opinions, dakka?

Unless he is getting an A in the classes without showing up, the hit to his GPA can come back to haunt him in a lot of different ways.

Why would someone need go to a class about cutting? It's not that hard to figure out just grab a sharp object/scissors and start slicing back and forth/snipping.

Clearly there's a strict training regime in the art of cutting.

As for the actual topic, the averages will drag everything else down. Clearly a dumb move as just showing up to the classes and getting through it would help them far more in the end. Hell I didn't like economics but was stuck with it. I sat in the back of the room playing Pokemon the entire time and managed to at least get 60% at the minimum on the exams.

If he doesn't need the classes, why not just drop them? He keeps his GPA, and doesn't have to go to any classes.

Unless your school has some kind of whacky grading system, and depending on how many classes he's skipping vs how many classes he's going to, and how well he's doing in the classes he does need, he still might not graduate if it drags his overall average down. I would point that out to him. Like, hypothetically, if he's taking four classes and has something like a 19 in two classes he doesn't need, and totally aces, 100%, two classes he does need, he still has an F overall (or at least, it'd be an F where I come from). TBH I skated through high school, more or less, I don't remember very well how grading worked with classes I needed vs. classes I didn't. If he can drop the classes he doesn't need, then he should probably do that.

Even if, in fact, the overall average doesn't matter, I would still point out it looks pretty bad to have a bunch of very low grades on a transcript.

I actually missed out on graduating with honors from college by .02 grade points because I bombed one class.

I know jack-all about joining the army, but I imagine he might have an easier time of it if his grades are good.

Its a public school and I would guess that its a high school level class that he's cutting. If it is a high school level class I had a cousin who thought the same exact way and eventually dropped out. He was later told that he was too stupid to even take a bullet to the chest. Just because people joke about the military being filled with meat heads doesn't mean they don't have standards.

If he's in college then he's an idiot and wasting what opportunity he has and will end up catching bullets to the chest. They don't care if you only need one more credit to have a college diploma, you're enlisted.

Actually, we don't have any sort of rules about GPA. You can graduate as long as you complete four years of english and a couple other classes that only matter in terms of pass or fail. I think he's obviously taking advantage of that fact, which is pretty low...

I kind of hover around a 3.0, but I don't know exactly what he has by now. There are people who graduate with 1.0s. I've seen it over and over again. Public schools are such pieces or crap.

I talked him into going to Physical Training class, mainly because it's his first period, and we ride the same bus, and I told him it was ticking me off that he was never there to talk about 40k

Well, he's kind of my best friend. Since like second grade. It wouldn't be to my advantage to let him fail and not graduate.

SOunds like primary school-aka can't cut.

I had massive senioritis. I'd advise that he should go to McDonalds. Look at the employees there. Then realize even they will be overqualified if he flunks out.

I guess there's always "human trials" as an occupation.

If you're talking about being a senior in high school: This isn't the end of the world. Try to encourage him to go to classes, but, ultimately, it's his own deal. If he's not the type that will be going to college, his GPA isn't really a big deal. As long as he's graduating, don't harp on him too much. If he is thinking of going to college... well, he should already have applications in by now. But, there's plenty of schools that will waitlist him, so he needs to do well in class, even if he thinks it doesn't matter.

If you're talking about being a senior in college: Encourage him to go to class. But, don't worry about it too much. He's an adult and is responsible for himself. As his friend, you can offer support, but the responsibility is his.

Just because he skips classes doesnt mean he'll be bad at the army, they don't really let you skip classes. Also you may think he is piggybacking off your Navy idea, but did you ever think to yourself he might want to fight for freedom as well?That and hes just not into dudes the way you are.

Not saying he'll be a bad soldier, just saying that if he doesn't even have the moral perseverance to go to school and get a free education, he probably won't have the character to be a good one....

Huh? I'm sorry, I wasn't aware you knew the entire situation, and I don't know what you mean by

I decided to join about a year ago, in full confidence and determination. About six months ago, the idea popped into his head, probably because he has no other decent decision in mind. I doubt he'll actually go through with it, but as far as I know, that's his plan.

Really though, it's because i was in the army and we joked about Navy being in a long hard tube full of seamen. Also, i'm tired of navy beating us in football(for 10 years)

That's what I figured, I just wasn't sure Could be worse. You could be a detroit lions fan.

I don't know his reasons for wanting to join, but I don't think he's committed to it, in other words. I'm led to believe he's piggybacking off my idea because he doesn't have any particular strong feelings about being in or any goal of what he wants to do when he's there. I could be wrong though.

Well it's certainly a gut check. He'll either come back focused and ready to make his own moves or he'll still be home when you get back from leave.
My recruiter said draw a circle around your friends, when you comeback many will still be in that circle, afraid of ever exploring whats outside the circle, still doing their old things, never changing.

In my senior year of high school I only showed up the exact number of time required to be considered attending, and I'm now an academic.

Whether or not cutting class has an impact on your life depends on what you want to do, what your grades are, and what your test scores are..
