Forge World Base Fighting Rules

In the experminental rules for fighting inside bases and compounds there's one glaring bit of oddness. When a model Stands and Shoots at a charging model you can't use Template or Blast weapons.

Now, I'm sorry, but if a 'Stealer charged at me down a corridor I'd damn well flame him! Flamers are perfectly suited to clearing rooms and creating an impenetrable wall of flame in a corridor, so if you have LOS you should be able to use a flamer. Seems really odd these rules say you can't... haven't they seen Alien/Aliens etc?

Probably balance issues. I could see how a single guardsman with a flamer could hold off a million nids. "I'll just put him on over watch."

But that makes sense though, in the open it's a bugger to use but in a building it's perfectly designed for the job. It's no less balanced than letting the 'Stealer tear down the corridor and feast on intestines whilst the guardsman gazes at his boots!

RE: Forge World Base Fighting Rules

Yep. I've seen Aliens. Notice how well the flamethrowers worked to stop the Aliens when they were right on top of the marines?

Oh yeah, not at all.

I think the point of the rule is that flamers/blast weapons are more of a heavy weapon than a reaction "look over there" and shoot type weapon like a rifle or pistol.

You wouldn't use a flamer to overwatch an area, it simply wouldn't work. You use a flamer (and for the most part the same is true with blast weapons) to clear out a particular area where you already know the enemy is (or suspect they may be).

You call over the flamer guy. . ."Hey Joe, get that flamer over here and burn that dark area".

You don't say: "Hey Joe, hold this hallway with your flamethrower" (at least not in the movies).

You need time to aim and shoot those weapons, and I think the rule captures a difference between basic rifles and flamethrowers.

RE: Forge World Base Fighting Rules

Not sure that's exactly right. You need more time to aim a rifle, unless it's used in a firing-from-the-hip way when it's quite inaccurate. A shotgun or a flamer is a 'Just give me a compass heading...' type weapon and well suited to a quick blast. Agree flamers primarily clear out and wouldn't be great on overwatch, but you surely could get a shot off?

RE: Forge World Base Fighting Rules

Well rules should be made mainly for gameplay and then modeled off of real-life and/or fictional inspiration second.

The fact is that standing and shooting something that is already engaged you in combat requires extra rules. You either have to "stop" the enemy's movement at some point, or designate a certain number of hits the template/blast weapon should cause if you're not actually allowing the player to place the marker.

Either solution requires extra rules.

So the simple way is just to say they can't fire. . .and the fact that the rule is semi-supported by movies/reality is the icing on the cake, IMO.

And a shotgun is not a blast weapon in 40k (unless they changed that in their rules), so you'd be able to fire it just fine.

surely most of these rules are cleared up with the new kill team rules (in the battle missions expansion) . 200pts of models fighting corridor-to-corridor room-to-room. the only exception I'd include is a model cannot move through a corridor of doorway that is not as wide as its base. the "true line of site rule will help alot as you can position a model round a corner and be able to shoot, whilst taking advantage of the cover save. as for templates, the "Everyman for himself" rule should balance it out nicely (keep your men together and they deserve to be taken out by a lucky grenade launcher shot).
