Personally, I think it was from a book I read a while ago called The Line of Polity, in a part where Skellor is taking over the ECS Dreadnought Occam Razor and the dying captain uses his last breath to wake up the entire ship's golem complement (golems are more powerful than astartes). Just the way it played out in my mind was awesome.

book - Dune the final battle, played out more epically in the book than the movie.

TV - Voyager; Scientific method. That episode really was something I found interesting because of the concept.

Yes! "The Inner Light". One of the best tv show episodes, ever.

Bookwise the entirety of Path of the Fury/In Fury Born (the second is an expanded version of the first, with more backstory), especially then last chapter or so.

Games : AVP 2, playing as Marine, making your escape in the last mission, standing on the end of a loading dock waiting for your ride, empting every scrap of ammuntion you have into the oncoming tide, barely making a dent.. VERY Nid moment that...

Can't be amnesia, or I have it too. I'm pretty sure they only made 4 Star Wars movies. New Hope, Empire, Jedi and then something they called Revenge of the Sith. Must have been a flashback or something from the droids. Great movie, ended with Darth Vader rising on the table, no loud noises at the end. Of course, I do remember a weird lightsaber too, that exited the handle at both ends, and I think Ray Park, epic as he is, had SOMETHING to do with Star Wars...just not sure what. I know the weird saber wasn't in those 4 movies though. Can anyone shed light on the mystery why some of us know of this so-called menace of phantoms, while others have no idea? It's a puzzler

My best Sci FI moment came not when I saw or read something....but realized much later that the bad guy in the Matrix is Morpheus. Hands down, he is THE bad guy in that trilogy.


My runner ups.....When the doors opened up in Phantom Menace and revealed Darth Maul.....

When Mace Windu walks down the hallway to confront Count Dooku...

Obi Wan's lament at the end of ROTS after defeating Darth Vader....

When Kirk pulls out the communicator and asks to be beamed up from the Genesis Cave in WoK.

When Dekker is saved at the end of Blade Runner...

When Mal shoots first in Serenity

All of Heinlein's Starship Troopers ( the book).

Oh! The death of the Enterprise -D. Ugliest ship ever designed for the Trekverse. I just wish they'd had the balls to make a real Trek war movie and showed the Enterprise E kicking ass.

On a related note....the timeloop in the new Trek, because now there's hope of them redoing TNG with good actors and better storylines.

How is Morpheus the bad guy? He was certainly misguided and naive, but no way was he a villain. Agent Smith wasn't really a villain, more like a really well-acted but poorly explained plot device. DS9 the final battle in Way of the Warrior and fleet action Sacrifice of Angels where the Klingons outflank the Dominion despite being about peace and harmony ST does action really well.

Luke's final desperate rage filled defeat of Vader before being zapped by the Emperor.

I agree completely. While there are some dumb things Like Jar Jar that were put in to draw in the kiddies, I enjoyed them. I like the clone attack scene in the arena, as well as the space battle in the beginning of the 3rd one. The final moments of Next Gen when Jean Luc comes down to join the rest of the crew at poker, just something about that moment that I always liked, the series is ending, but there they go on, continuing their journey as always.

When Fry finds out it was his nephew with the lucky clover not his brother, and 'don't you forget about me' by Simple Minds kicks in at the end of The Luck of the Fryish.

The Hawkmen battle against Rockship Ajax in Flash Gordon, worth it for the 'Better late than never' line alone, never mind the great fight scene.

The arrival of the Executor on screen in Empire strikes back, the Imperial March is still probably my all time fave piece of Sci-fi music.

The Get the hell out of our Galaxy moment by Sheridan in B5.

Jaghatai Khan's assault on the Spaceport in the Horus Heresy.

Pretty much every moment of 'What you Leave Behind' the final two episodes of DS9.

Halo 3 Annoucement video, I must have watched that over two hundred times in the period before Halo 3 was actually released. Still chuck it on every so often even now.


I am sure there are more that would warrent a place in my thoughts, or even possibly above some of those I have listed here, but its not easy to remember them all.

I did pick up the bluray Flash Gordon a little while back, I like it even more with the improved visuals and sound.

You can pick the first three from the last three purely by "badly written" ?

They are ALL badly written.
The only things that Empire and Jedi had over the rest was that at least George wasn't allowed to direct them (Empire, because Fox specifically said so.)

Doesn't stop them ALL being FX driven funhouse rides.

I'll admit they had some good bits the duel at the end of Phantom Menace was really good (the soundtrack especially) and Revenge of the Sith was ok, there may be a bit of a rose tinted view of the old ones but the fact is you could connect with the old ones the aliens may have been men in suits but they were real on screen characters, not alienating/souless CGI rubbish, the Deathstar sets were real sets again not CGI, same with the ships etc they may have been models but they were so well done you could suspend belief for them especially as a kid. as far as acting, yeah. It was pretty bad. Hayden was the worst, I think he dragged most of the other preformences down. Especially the scene where he took out Mace Windu and swore fealty to Palpatine. He wen't from remorse to being pure evil in 3 seconds. I think its that his acting is way OTT. Natalie Portmen and Ewan McGregor had good preformances, its just that they were undone by subpar writing and acting with other poorer actors.



That said, having read EU fiction, I think that the movies are the best of the star wars story thats out there. as far as acting, yeah. It was pretty bad. Hayden was the worst, I think he dragged most of the other preformences down. Especially the scene where he took out Mace Windu and swore fealty to Palpatine. He wen't from remorse to being pure evil in 3 seconds. I think its that his acting is way OTT. Natalie Portmen and Ewan McGregor had good preformances, its just that they were undone by subpar writing and acting with other poorer actors.



That said, having read EU fiction, I think that the movies are the best of the star wars story thats out there. There are a few gems in the EU, but way too much of it is garbage.


Not sure if that's a general point or not but i didn't say i hated the prequels i just think the originals are much better. The prequels had a couple of good scenes each but the originals were awesome and were, pardon the cliche but were original look at the design classics that came out of them the X-wing, TIE-fighter, lightsaber, Vader they created a universe that spawned a huge industry the prequels just didn't have that impact. maybe too high a standard was expected i don't know but there you go. Incidentally shouldn't this thread have been moved to OT by now.

I actually enjoyed the first starship tropers movie. If you ignore how far off from the books it were, it was a good, cool popcorn movie I mean, who DOESN'T have fond memories of the bugs assaulting the fort? Very 'nid vs IG feel to it.

Those that say that cgi is 'soulless', it's anything but. You can get way more expressive than people in suits ever could. Yes, some directors lean too much on its power and spectacle, but don't blame the tool.

Another thing I found annoyed me when I watched them in a row from 1 to 6 a while back was the dueling. At least in the prequels there's some actual choreography involved. Yes i do absolutely, i admit its probably down to personal preference but look at it this way. I don't like the prequels as much because of that reason the CGI characters/settings just aren't real enough. Contrast to the Lord of the Rings lots of CGI but the characters and most of the settings were pretty much all "real" and they were three of the best films i've ever seen. (king of the dead and balrog accepted, jackson got the balance bang on in my view, SW didn't)

Didn't think I made reference to CGI (though its overuse is indeed one of my pet hates). The charm I was referring to was the chemistry of the cast, particularly the central trio of the originals. They weren't the finest actors in the world, but helped by the (superior - take a bow Lawrence Kasdan) scripts, they delivered characters you could root for.

The acting in the prequels was, given the quality of the cast involved, shockingly wooden and the dialogue was actually worse than what Lucas wrote for A New Hope.

And childhood has nothing to do with my expectations. Inception, the Star Trek reboot and LoTR are some relatively recent examples of blockbusters with charm.

Peter Jurasik as Londo is suddenly taken from his usual role to a powerful and malevolent position, his 'NOW!!' is excellently timed.

Then the late Andreas Katsulas as G'Kar speaks... it gives me goosebumps, it's beautiful, it has no equal. That actor, covered in a latex costume, contact lenses and scifi background gives it more gravitas than anything else I've ever watched.




There are a great many moments in Babylon 5 that were epic and amazing, for action... well the vorlons finally stepping into the fight and taking apart the shadow fleet whilst at the same time and interwoven, kosh pays the price for their intervention, that was masterfully done.

Anyone who has not watched it should watch it, suffer the fairly dodgy 1st season and then enjoy how it grows into one of the true masterpieces of television.



Also, this is bloody great and anything with Adama Snr in it rocks the house...

Babylon 5 is amazing, no studio will ever again have the balls to green light 5 series of a show in advance to allow an overarching story line like that to happen again.
The 4th and 5th seasons being condensed into one and a new 5th having to be made up when they had a wobble was a bit sad but it still stands out even 15 years later as being ace.

Plus no stupid space craft flying as if they were in an atmosphere here.

Stargate Atlantis, when they cluster-nuked the Replicator home-world. Later that episode with the crazy space laser pounding the city shields. Great CGI, proper application of advanced technology and no sissy holding back. I mean really, when do you see someone deploy a friggin CLUSTER NUKE?

Another favorite Stargate Atlantis moment is the fleet battle over the Replicator homeworld later that season. Wraith, Traveller and Earth fleet fighting Ancient designed replicator ships is one of the best space battles I've seen in awhile. Won some awards for this episode if I'm not mistaken.

Star Wars space battles. I love space combat, especially the Star Wars way. The battle over Coruscant was particularly awesome. RoTJ battle over Endor was great as well.

Starship Troopers; Assault on planet "P". The bugs attacking the walls while the marines are desperately holding them back waiting for evac. I think this is the reason I started playing Tyranids in the first place. When Ranek looks over the walls and realizes they aren't going to win, he's just like..."crap"...Excellent CGI considering it's now 14+ years old.

You've got to admit how Kirk got it was silly.

He cheats on an optional 'unbeatable' test he's retaking for the third time, then gets an immediate public trial with everyone in the academy present. During the trial he demands to know who his accuser is (and fully expects the right to know), and argues with him over what the test the guy made means. Kirk moans about Spocks conduct violations and is then attacked by a blood monster.

Things happen.... Kirk is somehow back on the ship and goading spock into attacking him by saying terrible things about his lineage hours after he (Spock) has seen his mother die in front of his eyes. Spock decks him and then decides he (spock) is unfit for duty. Forgetting that convicted offciers aren't allowed to lead unconvicted officers, everyone decides kirk is now captain. Spock has a change of heart about himself and gets first officer back, they go and beat the big bad.

When Sarpedon basically only down to 3 remaining legs takes the soulspear and carves Daenythos from his dreadnought and then halls him into the warp while Lysander et al look on is pretty awesome. At least 3 SD are recorded into the Imperial Fist wall of legend aboard the Phalanx. It is also left open as Luko, Salk and Sarpedon simply vanish into the warp portals...So we could see some additional fiction down the road.


The last great Sci Fi moment I can think of currently was a 2 part episode of Voyager involving a ship that altered the course of time. It guest-starred Kurtwood Smith (Robocop, That 70's Show) I hadn't watched the series after season 2 so I am catching up on Netflix. This was truly a pretty epic story. Also if you ahven't seen the movie Moon, I recommend it. It's an homage to truly great Sci-Fi in regards to Aasimov and Sagan and Moorcock. My Favourite Sci-Fi Moment ...Ever!™ is from Ghost in the Shell (the film, although the manga's awesome), when Kusanagi fights the spider tank near the end of the film:

Kusanagi dodges shells from the tank by doing somersaults up a staircase, right after that there is a shot of the tank's rounds hitting the wall behind her. There is an evolutionary tree of life sculpted on the wall and the shells tear it to pieces. That one shot of the tree is my favorite moment. Still get goosebumps just thinking about it.

2 - The entire relationship between Anakin and Amidala. So incredibly uncomfortably written. Here's a few of my favorite gems which made me think "seriously...? Has George Lucas ever talked to a woman..?"

Anakin: "You are so... beautiful."
Padmé: "It's only because I'm so in love."
Anakin: "No, it's because I'm so in love with you."
Padmé: "So love has blinded you?"
Anakin: "Well, that's not exactly what I meant."
Padmé: "But it's probably true."

Lucas tried WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY to hard to make us care about that relationship. From the ridiculous dialogue to the tumbling around on an open field rolling through the grass cliches.

3 - The lightsabre fights. I will give phantom menace credit - it is probably THE BEST lightsabre fight of ALL of the movies. It was amazingly choreographed and properly done. Very little CGI used.

I remember watching Jedi and Empire as a kid and thinking how claustrophbic it would feel to fight in those narrow areas and in the dark vs a beast like Vader and how terrifying it would have been and how brave Luke was.

Now to watch some of the worst ones - digitally, they look alright, BUT they are all cgi with flashes of camera shots of the villains face (Palpatine looks like a old man taking a dump ... they are horribly editted with terrible camera effects and lighting and just an improper use of angles.

Don't even get me started on how disappointing the Grevious fight was... Yeah, Dooku trained you real well and all you do is spin your lightsabres like a windmill... what hes cutting off your hands and you aren't changing your strategy? Oh well hope for the best!

Truth be told - I didn't MIND Phantom Menace, but the other 2 were just abominations to watch. Terrible casting, and terrible acting. Natalie Portman is quite a fantastic actress but she certainly wasnt used to her potential in this.

Lucas is terrible when it comes to his own movies. I believe he didn't actually WRITE the first 3 movies (Ep 4-6), he came up with the idea and oversaw the process, but other people put it together, whereas with Ep 1 -3 he spearheaded everything himself, and it shows with the degrading quality.

I found that movie... confusing. I went into it with great expectations, but in the end I was just numb from all the robots and samurai and nazis and dragons and miniguns and so much nonsense that it just became loose sand. Awesome stuff is awesome, but this was just someone nerdgasming in my face for 1,5 hours.

My personal explanation is that this is a sign of how the Old Republic has gotten bureaucratic and perhaps a bit corrupt. My interpretation that has no actual support within the movies or the EU is that the Midichlorians are commonly found int he blood of Force users, but not the definitive test. Funny story about that.

My all-time favorite movie is Aliens, hands down. I first saw it when it aired on network TV. It had a huge impression on me - it aired about a year after it was in the movies, so I was around 11 or so. While it's a pretty great movie on it's own merits, I simply had never seen anything like that, ever, and atop that, I got to stay up late to watch it, so it really was a big deal to me. For many children of my generation, it was Star Wars, but I never got into that. For me, it was Aliens.

So, like I said - I saw it on TV. I think it was a special CBS airing (or maybe channel 11 WPIX, although they were more into sunday afternoon movies) - anyway, apparently they decided to cut some of the movie violent scenes for TV. This is back in the day, obviously. Doing so left them short on running time, and so they added in the scenes with the Sentry guns (which were not in the theatrical release). After I saw it, no one I spoke with had any idea what I was talking about when I talked about the sentry gun scenes. Everyone apparently watched it on tape. So, for years, I thought I was crazy - remember, no internets yet, and the only releases, other then on TV, were the theatrical and the VHS releases, which did not have those scenes. They DID exist on Laserdisc, but I knew not a single person that owned a laserdisc player - apparently at this point in time, they only had a 1% saturation rate in the US. I didn't even know someone who knew someone who had a Laserdisc player, and the disc itself was like $100. So, no one knew what I was talking about, and it stayed that way.

It wasn't until Aliens SE was released on DVD in 2004 that I was finally vindicated. Feels good man. I agree with the decision to have cut those scenes for pacing reasons, BTW, just like cutting what happened to Ripley's daughter - and I also agree with adding them to a SE release for people who want a more extensive, slower moving release as well.


So, on-topic. I'd probably pick, movie wise, when the elevator opens, and it's Ripley in the loader. Get away from her, you bitch!

I also really loved when River Tam opened up a can on those Reavers in Serenity.

I also liked Sucker Punch, even though it was stupid as all hell.

On the subject of Special Editions, the special edition of T2 contains a segment in the garage where Sarah is pulling the bullets out of the termiator's back where - in order for the terminator to start learning instead of being ROM - pulls the chip out of his head and sets it to "learn mode".

She and John have a fight about killing him by smashing the chip, John wins and they keep the terminator.

There are several other little bits that follow on from this including John teaching the terminator how to smile and eventually it is because of this setting being changed that the terminator is able to make the noble sacrifice.

My favourite bit though is when the terminator picks up the minigun and smiles, John says "that's really you".

In the standard film it seems that John means the minigun but in the SE it is the smile he is commenting on based on the terminator's prior failure to smile properly.

T2 special edition for the win, i dont think there is any other film i truly enjoy more than this. Even with my Arnie marathon (every Arnie film from hercules in new york to the expendable in a row!) this came up tops! However I would like to add the final set piece of District 9 for awesome sacrifice/redemption vibes. Another scene with a similar feel is the bit toward the end in Sunshine when Capa has to get to the airlock in the unwieldy suit and the music builds up.

The opening scene in the original Ghost in the Shell film is rather epic.

Personally, though, I think the most moving and awesome sci-fi film (and indeed book) is Children of Men. The set piece in the slum when it changes from total carnage army vs insurgents to utter silence as the baby starts crying is a work of genius.

Yeah, that scene is amazing. Too bad most people don't understand how important it is. I wouldn't if I hadn't read the novelization too. That shots are the beginning of Darth Vader's redemtion, who would be the first to come back from the Dark Side. But it actually say a lot more about Luke, as according to the novel, in that moments he has fallen to Dark Side too. The threats about her sister were too much and he couldn't help himself. And when he sees Vader's arm and stops... he manages to go quiet, in peace, and leaves Dark Side. So actually Luke would be the first, and all by himself. It's the same argument as for Kevin Smith: both writers are very consistent, and that particular note that they hit sounds fantastic to some people. Personally, I'm definitely in the camp that loves Firefly, but I can see how it isn't for everyone.

I liked Firefly, never got into Buffy or some of Whedon's other works. Firefly didn't grab me during the couple episodes shown on TV...It took getting the DVDs on NetFlix and watching them there. The two episodes shown on broadcast TV were a bad entry into the series.

I think I liked it because it felt different from a lot of sci-fi shows. The crew isn't an arm of a military branch. They aren't rebels (although some were ex-rebels, and Serentiy moved them towards that a bit). They're just trying to keep things going so the show focuses on character drama. The general lack of 'sci-fi tech' as major deus ex machinas was a big help, too.

I wish Serenity had gotten a sequel or two. Continuing with H2G2 I have to say Agrajag in the Cathedral of Hate. Easily one of the most bizarre and hilarious twists in any book/radio series ever. Plus Agrajag was voiced by Douglas Adams in the radio series.

Fair viewers, hold your stomachs, and if you don't like animals getting hurt... I wouldn't watch this.

Suffice it to say, this is probably my favorite scene from this film; in terms of effects, it's simply insane. Kurt Russell and Keith David are awesome, also.

Oh, and the film is "The Thing", by John Carpenter. If you haven't seen it already, do it, it's fantastic. TNG, Deep Space 9, Voyager, Enterprise were nowhere near as good as TOS. Horrible acting and the way they used the world.....Star Trek will always be like Aliens..how great could it have been....

Yep. And then you can ruin it in 5 seconds with a swarm of undead scrubbing bubbles removing the human element and making it about magic. Or having Eowyn needing Aragorn to rescue her after she had done what no man on the planet could have done. I mean hell, we're already talking about a 3.5 hr movie, why not take an extra 20 seconds to pace out the first charge of the Rohirrim so that it matches the proper swell of emotion one should feel, or the grass flaming into green about the hooves of Snowmane, or Theoden outpacing his eored. Pacing can be everything in a scene. That one missed the mark.

Don't get me started on Entmoot and the Seige of Isengard.

Or the final fight between Anakin and Obi Wan. (Shouldn't have forcechoked Padme. Shoulda given Obiwan the Lightning, and Padme jumped in the way. of course we have to be fair here, the LotR is an extremely epic thing to put on screen. I think Peter Jackson did a smashing job, especially compared to the animated versions out there.

Yep. And then you can ruin it in 5 seconds with a swarm of undead scrubbing bubbles removing the human element and making it about magic. Or having Eowyn needing Aragorn to rescue her after she had done what no man on the planet could have done. I mean hell, we're already talking about a 3.5 hr movie, why not take an extra 20 seconds to pace out the first charge of the Rohirrim so that it matches the proper swell of emotion one should feel, or the grass flaming into green about the hooves of Snowmane, or Theoden outpacing his eored. Pacing can be everything in a scene. That one missed the mark.

Don't get me started on Entmoot and the Seige of Isengard.

You are so right. I thought that scene with the endless tide of green ghosts totally blew it. I can almost picture the next scene:
Aragorn: Ok guys, eeer ghosts, I'm not gonna release you from your oath just yet, since you're here and quite handy too, let's clear out the entire Mordor while we're at it.

Lord of the Rings isn't exactly Sci-Fi but I'm ok with that being here as Boromir is one of my favourite characters and his death actually made me cry when I first saw the film. It's probably the second greatest act of courage in the whole film (first being Gandalf on the bridge) but despite his incredible strength, skill and pure willpower (C'mon, what other hero continues to fight with two arrows in his chest?) it still isn't enough to save Merry and Pippin.
