And now for something completely different: Krieg.

A test model for my future IG army.

Background.
A few years ago I did some daemons with the GW washes over mithril silver.

So this time in search of a very quick way to paint IG I stumbled on a Krieg force using washes as the primary painting method on a chaos dwarf forum.

The start model:

I then sprayed it white and a quick skull white paint job:

I then started with devla]n mud on the coat (I also got a bit distracted and forgot to take more photos)

About 1 hour later and 2 layers of:
Coat and dirt - Devlan mud
Uniform, boots: Black (I'm sure there is something wrong with my black it always comes out really thin)
Wood: Ogryn flesh
Mask, gaiters and straps: Gryphonne Sepia
Goggles: Baal Red
Blue bits: Asurmen ble
The wire in the wood is 2 layers badab black and 1 of devlan mud.

Then Krylon Matte Varnish and some flock gives me (a bit shiny due to flash)...

You might be on to something here...

And you got this result with only 2 layers of washes, no highlights, no basecoat apart from the white, nothing?

The possibilities for speed painting are endless!!!

And how did it look without the matte varnish?

Well, the speed is nice, but it very much looks like a wash over white, e.g. it looks like what it is. Maybe it wouldn't be as bad en-masse, so it might have some application, though they would clash pretty hard with any hand painted models in your army.

Personally I would have a hard time forking out all that money for a krieger army and then throwing a paintjob like this on them.

That being said...
I have to admit, for a single coat paint job it looks tons better than if you had just used traditional acrylic paints. I would probably recommend this technique anyone who doesn't have patience for 2+ coat paintjobs e.g. a good half of the players out there.

So all in all, good job.

Re:And now for something completely different: Krieg.

Hmm, I wonder how this would turn out if it was over a grey primer to add some additional depth to the washes? Especially in the black areas. Question: how much wash did you use on the model vs paint though? I know that's not a super easy question to ask, but for me I use the cheap craft paints for my base colors such as black & brown & then GW/vallejo for the more in-depth colors & tones but the damned washes aren't cheap so I'm curious how economical this would actually be for an IG army vs paint?

I wouldn't use it on my Krieg personally as I like to put a little more love into them, but I have used this method to great effect to paint Ork skin, which has saved me countless hours. I was able to paint 100+ Ork skins in just under two hours. (white base coat, devlan mud, thraka green, thraka green)

The wash method is the way I've done my Warriors of Chaos army, and I really like it. It's very unforgiving, as you need to be accurate because you are essentially using Watercolors. If you do an over all coat of blk wash first, you set all the shadows and dark lines in. Creating like a coloring book out line. Then go at it with the steps you have and see if you like it. This is with a white undercoat, then metals painted, then a Badab Black wash (not thinned at all), then you should be able to work out the rest, or follow the link to the gallery for slightly more detail.
