I hate if the character just boosts a unit or unlocks something "special". If it cant leave a mark on the battlefield then I pass. Thats why I play Warriors of chaos. Archaon, Sigvald, Valkia and many more are significant leaders and fantastic fighters. Thats why I little bit hate the 8th edition, since steadfast has ruined the "boon" these heroes bring to the battlefield.
