Calling All Everyones: Aid With Purple

Up until now, the only things I've been bothering to paint to completion are Hormagaunts. This is because, until recently, I was waiting until I got magnets before I stuck my Warrior's arms on. The colour scheme of my 'Fleet is;

Carapace - Chaos Black, with Red Gore + Scab Red outlining, ala Dark Eldar
Body - Necron Abyss with some Badab Black wash
Claws - Chaos Black with Skull White striping (Is this even a good idea? Other claw colour suggestions would be appreciated)

This is all well and good. However! For some reason I decided that my units would get a little subtle colour change up the scale, with progressing purpleness. I don't have a Hive Tyrant, but if I did, he'd be the purplest Niddy of all. I started painting my Warriors, with a basecoat of Chaos Black (which I'd done ages ago, before I decided on this colour scheme), followed by a drybrushing of Necron Abyss. I was hoping that Leviathan Purple wash would help give it a little purple tinge, but it makes absolutely no effect whatsoever; the colour is too dark, I think.

So, what I'm asking is - anyone know how to get a Necron Abyss-ish-purplish-y-effect? I was thinking I could replace the Necron Abyss with Liche Purple and follow up with some Badab Black and Asurmen Blue washes? I'm not exactly swimming in Warriors, so I'm a bit afraid of experimenting too much.

As a little side note - Genestealers are white, for me (ie I want them to be light colours). Or at least lightly-coloured. The rest of my Nids are so dark, though. What light colour would work well?

Thanks. <3

Putting a very dark color like Necron Abyss over Black will not get you much of an effect. Paint it on full strength, then highlight with the next brighter color. If you want to work with ink, try dry brushing white or grey on top of Abyss. The ink will change the white to purple and pop! Use with care, this method can produce some very electric results.

The basic paint theory to remember is: all paints are translucent. What you put under them is just as important as the top coat.

This is Hormagaunt Purple over Chaos Black in two layers with two washes of Leviathan Purple on that. Still a little lighter than Necron Abyss, but a few more washes could get you there.
