The battle at Torthon VII (Grey Knights vs Dark Eldar 2500 pts with pics, story, and now lists)

The following was two days of typing, and editting to bring you guys an entertaining story based on a recent kill points match on a spearhead deployment. I hope you guys enjoy it!!

M40 ano Emperator 639
S.E.D. 186, 1700hrs, Augury Chambers

The lights were extinguished in the chamber, the perowax candles wicks extinguished by the pulses of psychic energy that eminated from a solitary figure at the chambers center. Arch Auger Mortain sat in meditation, casting his well honed mind into the eddies of the warp, the holy rites spilling from his lips in cascade, warding him from the veracious entities that dwell there. He searched for rips, tears, frays, anything that would signal the invasion of the material plane by the daemonic forces of chaos. He followed a thread in the fabric of reality that whipped and danced in a macabre fashion as his centuries of experience and training guided him to do. The thread should lead to an unraveling surrounded by the baying hounds of the warp gods signaling a portal through which they might intrude. Mortains astral eye followed the thread until it lead to…. Darkness, a veil of mystery through which he could not penetrate, nor circumvent. He had heard tell of these events before in his readings, but never before had he encountered one before. Three times in the tome of Brother Orthius had these been mentioned, and each time they had preceded a great invasion that cost the lives of dozens of Brother Knights to quell.

Quickly Arch Auger Mortain inscribed what he had envisioned, commiting it to record, and quickly contacted Brother Captain Raphael Gerrus, a member of the Brotherhood of the Nocturne Wolf, an intimate and stalwart brotherhood, elite even among the mighty paladins. The Brotherhood is headed by Grand Master Chimeon Kiron Ymeaus Gilo, a legendary warrior who stood along side Lord Draigo when he banished the Daemon Lord Mortarion back to the warp. And Raphael Gerrus was considered Grand Master Gilo’s lieutenant amongst the Brotherhood, and was also one of Mortains dearest friends.

“Gerrus I have dire news!” Mortain exclaimed to Gerrus via a private vox channel. Stunned by the alarm in his friends voice, Gerrus replied, curious as to what had inspired such worry in a Grey Knight. “What is it Morty my old friend? You sound as if you’ve seen ghosts!” The joke was not lost on Mortain, who chuckled and relaxed as he replied “ I have seen an anomaly as I scryed the warp. This portent has been observed only three times in the history of our order. And each time, dozens of brothers died to repel the invasion to come! It is urgent that we act before the breach is formed” Now it was Gerrus’ turn to feel alarmed. “Mortain where have you connected this…. This haze in the warp to, and to what or whom is it linked?” After the sound of rifling parchments, the reply came, “Torthon VII, in the Tyloth region of the segmentum pacifica. As to the cause of this… haze I saw, I know not what or whom has caused it. Only that the eddies I sensed are centralized at 94.27 near one of the planets largest agrifarms.” There was a pause on the vox channel as Gerrus planned his course of action. “Mortain I must ask that you transmit your findings to my datalink immediately, Gilo must hear of this!”

“What do you command Master Gilo?” queried Gerrus. “Raphael” replied Gilo, in his baritone voice, “You’ve done well and Arch Auger Mortain is a credit to his fellows. Indeed we must investigate with all haste, and I ask you to hunt the enemy with our brotherhood at your side. The Pack will go with you. Accompanying you will be two of our Venerable Dreadnought Brothers, Kiafon and Leros. Also two Nemesis Dread Knight battlesuits have been allocated for your strike force.” The Pack Gilo mentioned, are thirteen Paladin Brother Knights of the Nocturne Wolf. These legendary battle brother each owned a heraldry that was equal to some of the greatest in the Orders history. These were renowned warriors and Gerrus felt honored to hunt with his brothers. “Also Master Librarian Macaby has offered his expertise to your endeavor. Do you accept your assignment Captain Gerrus?” The question was a sign of respect, rather than a question of devotion. “Master, I will visit the full measure of our Wrath upon the Enemy.” “Good” replied Gilo “Go, and may the Emperor guide your hand” Gerrus bowed to one knee, drew his sword and held it in front of his chest in salute, and ended the transmission.

It had been 12 standard hours since he had spoken with Grand Master Gilo, and Raphael Gerrus had already assembled the Pack, and recruited Justicars Ameroth and Phineus who would each lead a strike team of Brother Knights outfitted in holy terminator armour. Their hulking forms resplendent in their craftsmanship, they assembled in the teleporter bay of the Strike Cruiser “Crucio Apostat”, along side the 10 Pack members who also wore the massive Terminator armour that bore their personal crests and litanies as well as choice spells and wards each warrior had chosen and inscribed themselves. The Dread Knight pilots were outfitted in their armour as well and were eagerly awaiting the command to awaken the massive battlesuits that they wielded. As Gerrus briefed the assembly, each warrior ran through the rites of preparation and cleansing, anticipating a conflict that very well may cost them their lives. Only twenty six warriors would stand together in the coming conflict. And that conflict rapidly approached.

S.E.D 188, 0556 hrs, Segmentum Pacifica, Polar orbit over TorthonVII

Again, every brother had assembled in the transporter bay and where progressing through the rites of preparation and cleansing as servitors attended to their armor. With minimal communications each brother moved to stand with the other members of his squad and make ready for translation to the surface of the planet below.

As the knights prepared, Captain Gerrus spoke with Librarian Macaby. With a lilting accent, Macaby relayed his observations to the Captain. “I am mildly skilled in the art of augury and have searched the planets surface for further information with which we may prepare ourselves. I was surprised to find no sign of sorcery, or cult worship, none what so ever. What ever is causing this disturbance, it is not of the warp.” “What do you advise then Macaby?” Asked Gerrus, puzzled at the turn of events. “ While this anomaly is not the result of chaos directly, it still is causing a tear in the fabric of reality and I fear it will manifest as a portal through which the armies of the Enemy will flood. I feel we have no other choice but to proceed as planned.” Gerrus took a moment to steel himself, reciting the litany of faith resolute, and nodded. “Then proceed we shall. BROTHERS!!” said Gerrus loudly, “We descend. Justicars, I ask you to remain aboard the “Crucio” With Paladins Alakam, Zacharai, Orion, Likos, and Friedich. Await my summons. Brothers Kiafon and Leros, I request that you join me planet side for the initial wave, your firepower and reinforced aegis’ will be most welcome in our initial approach” Gerrus then outlined for the final time the strategy that would guide their actions and then commanded the warrior knights to their teleporter arrays.

S.E.D. 188, 0620 hrs, 94.27 Tybed continent, Surface of Torthon VII

The grass waved in a gentle breeze. a few hills dotted the landscape, and Torthons sun, beamed down through the cloudless violet sky. Suddenly points of brilliant light erupted for the merest fraction of a second, fading to reveal the forms of seven suits of Tactical Dreadnaught Armor flanked by two hulking mechanical Dreadnoughts, and those where flanked by two Nemesis Dread Knight suits nearly as tall again as the massive Dreadnaughts. Captain Gerrus signaled to the formation and they moved forward. As they advanced, Gerrus noted that it was just as Macaby had said. No sign of cultic activity. None of the bitter taste of warp spawned malice, just the feeling in his mind that the veil was thinning. As the group approached a hill with a few shrubs adorning its crest, Brother Ilion called a halt, and adjusted his auditory receptors to a higher level of sensitivity. In that moment all the Knights found the source of the noise brother Ilion had heard.

Six baroque ships, slivered and sharply angled screamed out of the far treeline and speed toward them at incredible speeds. The noise their engines made was akin to the screams of a dying man, in agony, on the battle field, warbled and nightmarish. It was a flotilla of Dark Eldar, arrayed in an attack pattern, and headed straight for the shining warriors gathered near a small hill. Lesser men whould have been startled by the sound and site, but these warriors were not mere men. They were not even space marines. They were Grey Knights of the highest echelon. Their only reaction was to ready their weapons and prepare for the fight to come

Turn 1

Master Librarian Macaby sped into action once he spotted the enemy. Delving through his arcane knowledge he began chanting the litany of focus, drawing his counciousness around him like a cloak. In response to the movement of his mind, darkness like drops of mist gathered around the Librarian and his fellows. From an outside perspective, it would have appeared as if a fog had manifested and remained, shimmering, surrounding and obscuring the Grey Knights. And the eldritch cover was immediately benifitial. For while preternaturally keen, even the eyes of the Eldar are not sharp enough to peirce the shroud that now hung around the mighty silver warriors, and the beams of anti-light that lanced out from the right most dark eldar gunboat failed to hit their marks. One of the transport vehicles among the flotilla were lucky, for as their weapon lanced out, it found its mark in the upper carapace of Brother Kiafon. The beam exploded on contact and the impact knocked the mighty war engine back leaving the ancient warrior housed inside stunned and disoriented. The Dread Knight pilot cursed from behind the form of brother likos, as two more beams of darkness slammed into his mighty warsuit forcing him to engage his redundancy drive systems in order to remain in the fight. In retaliation Captain Gerrus accessed his cerebral link to the orbiting Strike Cruiser and commanded the gun servitors to target one of the central xenos transports. In seconds the "Crucio Apostat's"mighty battlecannons blazed to life and slammed barrage shells
with unerring accuracy into the transport. The massive explosions forced down the arcane shields that protected the melevolently shaped craft and threw its crew to the deck, two of the lithe figures were thrown from its decks to the ground and died as their craft sped to a halt as the crew recovered. Brother Orion and Brother Rykan both leveled their psycannons at the xenos raider that had just sped within range, to their left, and psychic energy flaired down their weapon conduits to the focusing crystal housing, milliseconds later their barrels reported with the expulsion of several bolts of pure psychic energy which slammed into the prow of the craft despite the thicket of trees in the way. The resulting explosion spewed crew and ship to the ground and the two battle brothers smirked in satisfaction.

Turn 2

Like wolfs to a wounded animal, the xenos poured out of the distant treeline. A squad of howling warriors, scantily clad, wielding daggers and pistols as well as an assortment of strange and barbaric weapons, charged foward like maniacs. Ten highly decorated eldar, with golden pauldrons lept from their transport near the group of belegured paladins and opened fire. Splinter rounds found their marks, even through the tactical armor. Over their heads flew nine winged figures wielding firearms, these then flew to the ground hovering mere feet above the grassy plain, and with a strange sibilant cry, they opened fire at Brother Malcus, the Dread Knight pilot who had already taken direct hits from two of their cursed darklight cannons. This time however the splintery ammunition found no purchase, and merely served to make Brother Malcus angry. Foolhardily he rushed foward to play with the annoyances who had earned his ire. Only too late did he realize that their ploy had worked. For as he stepped foward, one of the eldar gunships shot out from behind its fellows and fired all three of its darklight cannons, and this time, the damage was sevear. The first beam severed the central drive colum losing Malcus control of the lower portion of the suit. The second and third beams speared the armour and found their mark in the fission housing unit. The explosion threw him from his harness and to the ground. The impact left his own suit of Terminator armor disfunctional and he lay there helpless, his rescue beacon pinging. Before Malcus lost consciousness, the leg servos of Venerable Brother Likos' Dreadnought walker stepped into view.

Venerable Brother Likos was enraged. For six centuries he had meded out the wrath of the emperor. Daeomon, heretic, and xenos alike had all met their end at his hand. He was death incarnate. He would not suffer the death of his brothers while he yet had the power to fight. His body was now adamantium and steel. His right arm churned to life as the control circuit connected to his right shoulder. His arm, was no biological thing, it was a mighty assault cannon. The rotating barrels capable of dispersing adamantine slugs at a rate of over three thousand a minute. As the barrels spun, Likos made to depress his right trigger finger. What happend in reality is the electronic signal his mind produced, was induced into the electrical firing trigger for the assault cannon. Likos spit fire! The holy rounds from his mighty weapon tore into the enemy warriors who had lept from their pathetic vehicle and haughtily gunned down his fellows. Mighty though the assault cannon was, the viridian explosion that bloomed among his target was not of his doing. Likos heard the voice of Brother Derenoth chip in through the vox emitter. "Honorable Likos, I pray my assistance is not intrusive? Or would you, that I left these miserable bastards to your capable hands?" Likos laughed. 'The aid is most welcome young one" said Likos, mirroring the mock suplication, "But please do not overtax yourself. We cant have the young ones dirtying their hands and hurting their new toys!!" His laughter rang out through his vox caster as he advanced toward his targets.
Their frail bodies and pathetic armor were no match for him. He laughter turned to righteous fury as he advanced, gunning down the xenos filth before him. As he crested the small embankment the eldar cowards were hiding in, he urged his dreadnought combat arm into action. Quicker than one would think possible from a machine so large he grabbed a fleeing eldar as it lept into the air. He crushed the life out of the alien before it could scream, whipped his upper torso three hundred and sixty degrees and hurled the limp corpse in his hand at the two retreating survivors.

Panic!!! Ikthrasil had been snatched from the air by the monkeigh monstrosity. Garthurind was not going to meet the same end. He and Tirasnidir ran. The angry roar of the machine echoed behind them. It must have run dry its store of ammunition when it gunned down his fellow kabalites, thought Garthurind. No matter, he was running and bullets were not chasing him. He heard a whooshing sound and looked over at Tirasnidir who was running less than a meter away from him... and then there was no more.

Brother Likos was pleased. "Two xenos with one corpse" he chortled. The corpse had hit both fleeing eldar so hard, the impact likely shatterd their spines. "Irrelevant", thought Likos, "neither moves... now onto their whisp of a transport."

Librarian Macaby was being assailed from the warp. He could feel his minds defenses being slammed into. This assault was not the cause of the shadow that had drawn the grey knights to this planet, but the activity had drawn the attention of some very hostile entities. As he battled on the astral plane, he got careless and caught a xenos round in the joint of his right leg. The resulting pain was like nothing he had ever felt. The pain coursed into his body as the toxins contained in the splinter where injected. The pain was such a destraction that it was all he could manage to maintain his mental defenses leaving him unable to maintain the shrouding that he had summoned to protect his battle brothers. The firestorm that the xenos leveled at the small band of warriors began to find their targets. Several brothers reported breaches of their armor and the wounds began taking their tole. And yet the brothers fought on.

Captain Gerrus, seeing that his brothers were no longer protected, and that Macaby was wounded and unable to fight, ordered him to retreat. Gerrus then opened his mind to the rest of his brothers and joined them together. He ordered the justicars into battle and join they did. Gerrus provided the Crucios gun servitors with a new target this time. The squad of xenos warriors that had previosly been evicted from their craft so violently, had risen and fired upon Gerrus' men. Now it was their turn. Again barrage rounds rained down and the explosions rent the tiny creatures. Body parts and viscera flew into the air as fire plumed in the xenos midst. The sharp sound of an assault cannon firing, caught Gerrus' attention. He looked towards the sound as he surveyed the field and saw Venerable Brother Likos charging the squad of decorated xenos that had just incapacitated three of the paladins accompanying Gerrus. Gerrus noted, with amusement, the sight of using the corpse of a fleeing enemy to dispatch the other fleeing eldar as one worthy of record in the Hall of Warriors. Gerrus attention returned to the field.

Venerable Brother Kaifon had recovered from the direct hit he had taken, and in retaliation he sighted in on the blasted craft whose darklight had found its home in his carapace. The heat sink linked to his two lascannons was as cool as the void, he squeezed what would have been his left trigger finger and held it. The neuro-transmitter sent the signal to the charge magazine housing. Hadron gas was sent to the compression chamber. The machine that held Kiafon routed power from its core to the chamber and the hadron gas compressed into plasma as hot as the surface of the sun. As Kiafon made to release the trigger, the magnetic field containing the superheated gas opened, allowing the plasma to blast down the charged barrel and lance out to collide with the front armor of the eldar transport at which Kiafon aimed. The plasma beam demolished the armour and tore through its structure leaving a gaping hole. The missile that Kiafon sent after the beam proceeded to enter the hole. The detonation removed the entire engine housing, its power core, and the deck above it, leaving the transport immobile and listing on its gravitic repulsors, flames licking at its hull.

Justicars Ameroth and Phineus had arrived on his far right, right into the enemy lines, Ameroth and his team engaged ten of the eldar warriors while Justicar Phineus led his men to the Ravager, his psycannon spat holy fire into the vessel its engines flared, and with a piercing shriek the engines power core overloaded and exploded leaving the gunboat immobile.

Just as Ameroths squad crashed into the eldar warriors, cutting two down before they could react, Phineus and his men smashed into the immobilized eldar vehicle. It was that this moment that Phineus attempted to unlock the psychic might of his men, and it was at this moment that he was overwhelmed. The creature from the warp that had sought to overwhelm Librarian Macaby now turned its attentions to the Justicar. The daemon attacked with such force and ferocity that the justicar had no time to react. His eyes rolled up into his head and he fell, dead. His team gathered their strength and pushed the creature back, defending the soul of the fallen justicar. They vented their outrage on the xeno vehicle before them and its explosive demise illuminated the battlefield for a moment.

Turn 3

The Battle was in full swing! Captain Gerrus stood back to back with Paladins Likos, Orion, and Fredich. The eldar were bearing down upon their location. Already Macaby, and Paladins Zacharai an Alakam were incapacitated and yet the Knights fought all the harder.

Brother Paladin Berus and his brothers in the assault team arrived to cover Captain Gerrus' flank. The massive Dread Knight moved up to support their arrival as well. The eldar had moved up, the garish, winged ones moved still, their weapons issuing their warbled shrill report as their rounds impacted harmlessly off of tactical dreadnought armor. What occured next brought sarrow and rage to the Grey Knights. From the opposing side of the hillock the Knights had gathered behind, a high pitched squall sounded and got louder. From over and around the hill zoomed whooping Dark eldar jetbikes. Sleek as a dagger, yet much deadlier, they swooped into the group of Paladins with Captain Gerrus. Their crafts bladed hulls chinked into the thick terminator armor, knocking Brother Orion to the ground as well as smashing Fredich and Likos to ground severing their power servos. Their true intent became clear as they whipped past the beleagured warriors, for they snagged Brother Orion with their macabre chains, and as quickly as their assault began, it ended, and they hauled their prize away.

The squad of decorated warriors who had been harriying his left flank had tired Captain Berrus, would he that they were in arms reach so he may vent his wrath upon them with his blade. He settled for smiling with grim satisfaction when Brother Derinoth brought his massive weapons to bear against them. The viridian erruption of the stepped up psychic charge from his psycannon killed four of the horrid creatures alone. The churn of his psilencer sent bolts of pure energy at such a rapid pace that those eldar hit by the weapon were unrecognizable save for as a smear of xenos flesh on the ground. Derinoth roared through the vox channel as he visited the righteous fury of the Grey Knights on the enemy.

Across the field the Eldar transport pulled away from the warriors who were now engaged with Justicar Ameroth and his men, as it did, the squad that was with Justicar Phineus unconcious form, leveled their psycannon at the speeding craft, the psycannons rounds crashed into the side of the craft. They struck the vessle with such force that the crew were thrown from their feet and its shield overloaded, causing arcs of electricity to corruscate along its hull as it slowed to a halt next to its fellow that had caught the orbital strike, its deck fires now extinguished. In response to this, the immobilzed transport sighted in on Venerable Brother Kaifon, and its darklight cannoneer relieved the massive warmachine of his two lascannons. The explosion that removed the weapon, threw off Kaifons aim, and the missile intended to demolish the xenos scum who relieved him of his favorite weapon, instead flew into the engine array of the raider while its crew attempted to recover. The Vendicator MRKIII anti-armor missile with a krak warhead, slammed into rear of the craft. The explosion tore the back half of the vehicle from the other, its crew were thrown from the deck and the craft hung in mid air, now useful for little more than spare parts, its cannon facing away from the fight and with no ability to move. Kaifon smiled with satisfaction at the turn of events.

As Venerable Brother Kaifon enjoyed the fortunate turn of events on his side of the battlefield, Venerable Brother Likos was enjoying a pleasent suprise aswell. As he neared the transport of the squad he had just eliminated, a Ravager swooped around the transport to bring to bear its three dark lances and reduce him to little more thank scrap. In its pilots haste to destroy him, the pilot steered the craft into a tree and sheered off its propulsion vector ports, leaving the vehicle unable to move. The cannons however still functioned, but in his many years of experience, Likos new better than to sit still. He lunged foward at maximum speed, his leg servos churning, as the xenos gunners brought their cannons in line with him. The dark light lanced out, missing his carapace by the merest fraction and plowing into the ground behind him driving the dirt into the air in three great plumes. Likos' momentum carried him into the prow of the vessel and the brought the his combat arm up in a wide, downward ark, and thrashed the prow of the gunboat into ground. The sudden change in direction broke the craft in half and caused the core to leak. Dark, violet flames erupted and the vehicle was finished.

The combat was almost ammusing. Justicar Ameroth swung the haft of his halberd and smashed one of the eldar warriors in the side of the head, the lithe warrior crumbled to the ground. The combat went well for them. The xenos were quick, but weak. Their blades could not pierce the might terminator armour, except the leering warrior who held a lond slender blade which glowed with a sickly green light. He had already speared one of his sword brothers, leaving the brother kneeling on the ground blood poring from the wound. Ameroth would brook no more of this. He charged with his shoulder down and slammed into the well armed warrior. The creature flew back a full ten meters and landed doubled over. As the eldar raised his head, he saw the double barrels of Ameroths storm bolter staring back. It was the last thing the creature would see as Ameroth squeezed the trigger.

Turn 4

At the death of their leader, the kabalite warriors broke and ran. Although slow, they were implacable. The terminators charged foward, with Justicar Ameroth at the lead. When they hit the next squad of warriors, the results were as expected, 1 was trampled before any blows where swung and a further two were disembowled by the long hafted halberds. At the sight of their comrades being slaughtered, the rest of the cowards lost their nerve and ran. Again the terminators charged after. However even as they ran the xenos fired their weapons. Waves of splinter like rounds hurled at the terminators. The rounds began to find their marks, and quickly 3 brothers were cut down, leaving the Justicar alone. Greeved but undaunted, he continued foward, spraying bolter rounds and litanies of hate at the eldar as they ran. Out in the open and exposed, he saw the barrel of the immobilized raider only meters away, swing to bear on him. With no where to go, Ameroth stared down the gunner. Time seemed to dialate, Ameroth reached into the warp, using it to fuel his movement, focusing his mind to the point of his halberd as the beam of darklight left the muzzle of the weapon, Ameroth thrust his weapon foward directly into the beam and split the beam into hundreds of harmless slivers that mearly bounced of his armour. The sight of this caused a cascading retreat in the immediate area. The survivors from the warrior squads that attacked Ameroth and his men, lost all hope of victory and made a full retreat.

Across the field, the wild band of crazed, half naked xenos warriors moved with an unearthly speed. Their feet hardly touched the ground as the rushed, and lept, toward Paladin Timon Berus and the other Pack members in the assault team with him. At the center of the mass of screaming warriors was a shadowy figure, who shifted and split into mirrior images of himself. The display was confusing but Berus spied a pattern to the shifting. He centered himself within his brothers and tested the heft of his hammer, the balance was perfect and the blow he would deliver would be swift and absolute. Slightly ahead of the group, and directly to each side of the swirling mass of images, where female eldar wielding nets and tri-pronged tridents. These oddly equipped eldar began to leap in a circular pattern, flailing their nets out into long, entangling messes.

As the two groups of warriors met, the net-wielders wrapped the arms of paladins Peridol and Hersien, who could no longer swing their now entagled weapons, the shadowy figure used the opening to slash deep wounds into the two paladins. Expecting such a tactic, Berrus had already begun to swing his hammer in a winding arc. He spun in a full three hundred and sixty degrees and delivered a long back-handed blow to the image he calculated to be the actual eldar. With a resounding crunch the massive weapon deliverd a crushing blow to the ancient archon from whome the illusions had sprung. The look of pain, suprise, and rapturous pleasure that suffused the archons face disgusted Berus. At the sight Berus poured all of the psychic might at his disposal into the head of his hammer, the archons body turned to ash and his cloak fell to the ground empty. Two of the whyches attempted to slay Berus as his back was turned. They failed to notice, however, the white helmed knight who proceeded to decapitate both of them with a single swing of his sword. At this the entirety of the remaining eldar figured it was better to cut their loses and run. And run they did.

In the after math of the fighting, it was discovered that four paladin brothers had been incapacitated. Librarian Macaby was already aboard the Crucio. Justicar Phineus had died from his encounter with a great power in the warp and four grey knights had met their ends. During the fighting noone had noticed that Knight Malcus was missing. But as the role call was taken, it was discovered that like paladin Orion, he too had been dragged off by the jet bikes. Assumed lost, their names would be added to the Wall of Heros.

Prologue

Back aboard the Strike Cruiser " Crucio Apostat," Captain Gerrus consulted with the recovering librarian. "Have you ever encountered a device such as this in your reading or wonderings?" "No," replied Macaby "But I can tell you that this device is the cause of the blackness I encountered.
