Warmahordes intro problem.

Now, I'll set the scene. Myself and a few other of the Warmahordes players up at my club for the last month or so have been demoing the game up there with the various Battlegroups we have at our disposal and many people were all interested and very gung-ho about getting into the game, but we've hit a snag. No-one appears to be willing to buy ANYTHING..

I'm a bit in over my head here as we are lacking a Press Ganger round the Lincolnshire area (correct me if I'm wrong) and I'm sure the problem has arisen with one of them. The guys who are playing it week in week out with our models appear to have developed the attitude of "feth it, Grimtuff and the guys will bring the models, we'll just keep using them indefinitely". Obviously I only noticed this earlier tonight when I brought up the idea of doing a Journeyman League starting in Feb/March time but on a fortnightly/monthly basis instead of week to week. The moment I told them they would have to buy their own models for it a lot of them backed off, making excuses such as "oh I've got this 40k army to finish" or "I can't afford it". It's £30-£35 FFS!

Now, the problem was somewhat exacerbated after seeing the JML rules and found the game progresses well beyond the battleboxes, which is another thing some of them cannot wrap their head round as it eventually involves spending yet more cash. See they're prepared to play be not prepared to take the full plunge into this game despite being disillusioned about GW and wanting something different.

How have people handled this situation if it has come up with them, as I am frankly somewhat annoyed and stumped

Thanks in advance.

That situation sucks. Try only bringing enough for you and one person to play one night, tell them such ahead of time, and start doing it regularly to show them you're serious about not being their free ride anymore. If that doesn't change the situation, nothing will and they're not actually serious about playing.

Also, if you don't have a Press Ganger, apply!

ick sounds like a tough situation. I can understand the hesitation to invest in a game.

how about arranging a "newbies-only" battle box brawl (models supplied by you of course)where the newbies duke it out and the winner gets a battle box or a warcaster?

that way the guy who wins suddenly has a foot in the pool and we all know how easy it is to dive in after that.

granted this means a "cash out" approach and youll probably just get one guy into the game but thems the breaks

Even playing against one another too, so the have a good basic grasp of the rules for the factions they've gravitated towards, then I brought up the idea of doing a Journeyman League to encourage this growth even further, gave them a very long timescale to get the required models, I initially said Feb but changed it to March. That's 2 months to scrape together £35 ish (and all these people work, they're not exactly penniless students) but they're not biting, stating the reasons I gave in my OP.

@grimtuff

like i said its understandable that theyd be hesitant to invest in another game heck you can see it all over dakka. Even if people enjoy a game, if theres no desire or incentive to buy into it most people wont. You ARE supplying the models anyway so its easier for them to just use yours ANd get the enjoyment without spending a cent.

now if you decide to not let them use your models anymore, understand that can have the effect of cutting them off from the game and them losing interest entirely. These guys are already lukewarm about the game so this is a real risk.

You can keep playing with them as is and hope that they suddenly grow a desire to buy in or give them another reason to do so like appealing to their "got to catch them all" tendencies.

i remember how i was talked into gettin into WMH. I was interested but I wasn't planning on getting into WMH anytime soon but the guy at the game store gave me a hefty discount on the rulebook...and the rest is history

Drugdealers know that "the first one is free" is the best way to get someone hooked

@Grimtuff

I am not sure if it works the same way in your local area but my approach to this when it happened in my area was something this this.

1 - Find the "Alpha Gamer", the person who others will follow and get them into the game. Once this person commits, others will follow.

2 - Does your local gaming shop stock the PP range? Impulse buying is a big thing!

Will post more when I think of it.

Sadly the only B&M store we have in Lincoln is a GW. The closest stores to us that stock PP lines are in Sheffield and Mansfield. I feel like I've tried more or less everything, as I have more or less had to start from scratch again as my main opponent is now fighting in Afghanistan.

I think I may have inadvertently tried the "Alpha Gamer" thing as the ex-manager of the aforementioned GW (and thoroughly all round nice chappy) plays Khador anyway. No doubt it roped a few more people in, but when they appear not committed to lay down any cash on this (in spite of the fact I hinted every week prior to Christmas about asking for a Battlebox as a prezzie) it's getting frustrating fast.

Warmahordes intro problem.

This is unheard of! I have never ever experienced anything similar wherever I have played and whoever I have played with.

First off, borrowing armies happens rarely! I would hardly borrow my miniatures to anyone. To my friends once in a while maybe. For my miniatures to be used, I have to make pack them, bring them and unpack them. Afterwards, I have to do it all in opposite order. Doing that for 1 army is ok, doing that for other people every time is not ok.

Second off, I don't have space to transport more than 1 army anywhere. I use Battlefoam's Hordese bag and it doesn't even fit all my miniatures.

Thirdly, my minis are personal. I could never fully enjoy a minature game like Warmahordes or Warhammer fantasy/40k with someone elses models. When I play, I also show off my work and effort. Playing with models I haven't scraped, cut, glued, sprayed and painted is just too unpersonal. I wouldn't really "know" the models or have any relationship to them so to speak. If I had borrowed my minis alot to other people, what also could happen is paint to fall off and they would after a while need alot of repaint. That is more than enough work for the minis I use, if I don't have to do the same for minis other people use as well! Or if I don't do this, that means either those minis are not painted well, so they wouldn't need repaint cause they don't look good anyhow. Or they looked good at first, but later on just looks worse and worse after use.

Either people put an effort and making a personal army, or they don't. Borrowing other people's minis is no real way of playing this kind of game (after the first test games).

Warmahordes intro problem.

I've noticed that a few different stores and PGs locally have tried to lure people in with a caster purchase or a solo rather than the battle box. The players bought the models, assembled and painted them (as a break from their 40k/WHFB/etc army).

After that, once they saw how great the finished product looked, they were more apt to buy a battle box (if just for the models) and start playing more regularly.

Re:Warmahordes intro problem.

Now I don't want to keep shooting people's ideas down. As this is one of the first times I've been on the other side of one of these advice type threads and you find yourself shouting at the screen saying "just take the advice you fool!", much like in a certain recent thread in Dakka discussions about a strange kid and his mum at an LGS. But I digress...

To give a little more details, this is not an LGS I am talking about, Gobstyks (the club in question) is a gaming club that meets in a Church hall every Thursday. So the financial solutions are somewhat out of the questions they would all have to come out of my not particularly deep pockets. I could try and twist the club treasurer's arm, so it's not a total no no.

I do think the only solution is going to have to be to play hard ball and not bring any additional models. I'll do this for a week or three and see how I get on, as frankly the spongers can put up or shut up. I feel I have given the originals that tried it out multiple times prior to Christmas ample time to get the stuff they need to play and if they were truly serious about it then they would've got at least a starter box like some of the others have.

Show them a bigger battle and how much more they could do if they bought into the game. The tactical depth, the pretty models to collect and paint or the fact that there are always ways to win even with one model vs a whole army?

What I think your gonna have to do is work on each person individually. Find out why they play tabletop wargames (tactics, paint, converting, etc.) and emphasise that PP do it better without putting down their current favourite (Saying GW sucks ass puts them in the mind of defending, rather than moving on to PP's stuff). Then hopefully one or two will join in and you'll see more follow.

Good luck.
