Magnetic Ghost/Doomsday Ark

I am a terribly slow painter, with little talent, so I usually look for ways to get the most out of my models. So when I started on a Ghost Ark, I looked for ways to also install the gun for Doomsday Ark duty. At first I was looking at ways to make the ark look like the official pictures for either version of the vehicle. Too much work I figured and settled on a Ghost Ark configuration and placing the gun inside when running a Doomsday Ark configuration. I took some pictures of magnets and stuff before painting if anyone is looking for what someone else did before tackling the project themselves.

Pictures are in this Dakka gallery.
http://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/images-23350-23109_Magnetic%20Ghost%252Fdoomsday%20Ark.html

Looks nice! I can't tell if the cannon or the "ribs" are actually magnetized or have slotted ends that simply slide into place? Care to clarify?

Also, if the cannon and/or ribs are magnetized, what size magnets did you use and how do you keep them from rolling?

Gavin Thorne wrote:Looks nice! I can't tell if the cannon or the "ribs" are actually magnetized or have slotted ends that simply slide into place? Care to clarify?

The rear end of the cannon has a magnet on it. The is ark body has a corresponding magnet where the rear of the gun attaches. Before I attached the lower ribs, those two magnets grabbing each other could hold the gun in position quite easily. The gun has cables that reach down to the ribs, but those are just for show. I filed them down so they barely touch the ribs so I don't break them constantly installing and removing the gun.

Also, if the cannon and/or ribs are magnetized, what size magnets did you use and how do you keep them from rolling?

The ribs only have magnets where the warriors hook in and there is a picture that shows that. I use 1/8" neodymium magnets. I'm not sure what you mean by rolling. I drill a hole to hold the magnet. Then use thick super glue, or in this case I didn't have any on hand, some epoxy resin to fill the hole around the magnet. So, you can't actually touch the magnet because there is a thin layer of resin covering it. They don't move.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Oh, if you're asking about the pieces rolling once they're on...
The ark has some prongs that stick into the back of the cannon. Probably for strong glue anchors but they keep the cannon for rotating at all. You can rotate the warriors by pushing on them, but as soon as you stop pushing, they stop moving.

Thanks, I appreciate the response! I picked up one of these for my son's birthday and we haven't assembled it yet since he wanted to magnetize it. You've given me some great advice here and we'll probably give it a go this weekend.
