Just though I should create a thread for gun owners/shooters. I currently own an 12 gauge Remington 870, and am saving up for a Saga rifle in .223. Maybe even convert it to a tactical configuration, and make it 922r compliant.

I have a Weinrauch HW45 I used to shoot at rats and pigeons in the back garden.

It's currently languishing at the back of a drawer as I'm living in a flat now.

Once I move to Henley I'm thinking I'll join the rifle and pistol club in Marlow, and buy an SMLE for full bore target shooting.

My collection is rather short:

Plain old single shot 20g shotgun. Don't even know what brand, Wal-Mart issue.

Mosin Nagant Model 1891/30 Infantry Rifle.

Mosing Nagant Model 1907 Carbine.

Ruger LCP for concealed carry once I get licensed.

Next gun will probably be a Glock 26, or some sort of 1911.

I know of it. I've heard Magnolia state armory makes a good mag well adapter for ar15 mags.

I feel your pain brother-man. The AK shown in my avatar, plus an 870 and an XD 9, were all sold to fix my truck when I lost my job some time ago. I still miss that AK...nothin special about it, I just really liked it.

NEF Pardners are worht every penny of the what 150< that they cost. 250 I think for the rifle, but at that price point there are better options.

First gunpowder weapon was a .410 NEF too. Killed lots of rabbits with the thing, day and night, moving or not, they all fell over.

....Was an awesome gun. I hated it with a passion. Never could find a proper position to shoot it where it didn't snap me in the cheek.

I should buy another one, since I gave mine over to my younger sister and she let it rust over.

Agreed, the simplicity and reliability they have is just unmatched, specially at the price, you can get them used for under $100 if you look hard enough. And its a fun gun to shoot, I learned on it, my wife has since learned how to shoot starting with it and my son has shot it a couple times, but I think hes still a bit young to let him call it his own.

So, what's everyones preferred choice in optics? Caliber?

Myself, I'm partial to all things EOTech and Trijicon. I really like EOTech's reticle pattern, and Triji's because...well...it's Trijicon. Currently budgeting an ACOG and a 3-9x Accupoint. Caliber wise would have to be the good ol' .308. Does the job with so many applications, you can't really go wrong with it.

Just do me a favor and consider getting him a 20g instead of .410. 20g ammo is cheaper and inspires confidence, because its pretty easy to hit things. .410 is a marksman's(well shotgun marksman) gun that's difficult to hit things on the move with and ammo is not cheap.

That's downright cheap, feeding my SMLE costs no less than $15 for 20, I could check the exchange rate but off the top of my head that's at least 50 quid per hundred. The other side of that being I suppose that surplus ammo may be packed with cordite and have corrosive primers.

For pistols its the same. .45, 7.62x25, 9x18MAK

I really like combloc guns, and as I said I am saving up for a .223 Saiga. Which is pretty much a sporterized AK in .223

British ammo was filled with cordite until after WW2.

On the plus side, there were probably billions of rounds produced considering the Indian army, Australian, South African and so on all used imperial equipment.

not to be too picky but Canada as well. I ran into a proposal from I thing the late 80's or early 90's to restock and rebarrel a number of No.4's in the hands of some kind of Canadian volunteer paramilitary. It was well meaning but overly expensive, they wanted mcmillian stocks and custom barrels, I'm pretty sure with a caliber change too.

.303 was once very prolific, now difficult to find. It may be that those surplus stores remain mostly in the former Empire.

IIRC the Indians liked the SMLE so much they redesigned it and continued manufacturing them in .308.into the 60's or 70's

Once the throat on mine is shot out, I'll probably have it working into a replica Delisle carbine or replace the front furniture and put it on a wall...more likely the former.

about me. my father had inherited a top-break single shot shotgun (12g i think) from a grandfather. also he bought a .22 LR semiauto rifle. i believe it was either Czech or German made.

i'd rather want to own one. the gun politics here in Thailand however, becomes tighter and extremely medieval.

More .22LR pistols (plinkers) and rifles than family members including canines. Rumors about wiener dog crew served anti aircraft .22s are baseless I tell you… The family loves .22 Long Rifle. Its proof of the existence of the Great Pasta Being.

Other pistols. We have access to various 9mms, and .45 ACPs. I believe 4-5 .380ACPs IIRC, but maybe more. We also have a model 29 .44 mag in case of Aussie drop bears, revenuers, or if I just feel lucky. One seriously old school cap and ball revolver, ye old cannon of much smoke making! Probably will fill out the bench with two new 9mms in the next 12 months.

Other long guns: M1 and Remington 870 given to me when GC turned 5 by my dad, as a future boyfriend motivational device. Would love a nice 30-06 bolt action, but that’s about all I want (outside of a blackpowder Sharps) as the eyesight is getting worse not better.

So it all works out. Everyone has a rifle, plinker, and higher caliber pistol. Now the question you have to ask yourself squirrel is, do you feel lucky? Well do ya, punk?

9mm, 5.56, and 12 gauge.

Optics wise, well...I used to hate optics. Then I found out what an aimpoint micro was, swallowed gravel when I paid for one in a larue QD mount as a test, thinking that if it failed me as every other optic (Cheap low end stuff all) had, I would be able to sell it to some mall ninja and at least break even. Two years later, I don't want to run without one. Certainly could, still keep up with iron sights, but I don't WANT to.

....and all my mounts that require QD are now larue as well...

....That particular optic now occasionally has a 3x magnifier running behind it too....

A lot of the old surplus ammo has dried up here in the states. .303, 7mm,8mm, .30 Mauser are not sold by the bucket load cheaply anymore. However a Serbian manufacturer Privi partizan make many of the old military calibers, for a reasonable price.

The action sucks, the trigger sucks, the safety -REALLY- sucks, the stock sucks, the sling attachment points suck (unless you have an issue sling for it.)....

But the target on the 600 yard berm still would not have been any more dead if I had borrowed my friends M1A (With requisite hubble space telescope bolted to the top of the thing.) to make the shots. It's a good gun if you manage to find an example that doesn't have a moonscape-like bore, it's just about as unrefined as you can get.

Finally a gun thread that just feels right posting in.

All the other threads got me thinking so I stopped by the PD the other day and filled out some paperwork... picked up my permit to purchase an hour ago. Now I can go buy handguns and assault type rifles in MN!

First buy is probably going to be a H&K USP compact in 9mm, with the potential purchase of a threaded barrel to go with it (they don't have the option from the factory, but have factory threaded barrels)

After that it is saving money for Germany and for another purchase after I get back... either another hand gun, or rifle, either ar15 or ak.

I also want to build a 1911.

As an aside the NRA mag has an article about a company that is turning out new Mausers. I can't remember if they are the K98 Karbines or the earlier preWWII style.

Well first I wouldn't bother changing how you spell armour and Colour as that is quite clearly how they were meant to be spelled. I've spelled Afrika well THAT way my entire life, and in Uni no one has even batted an eye.
As far as immigration as long as you have a marketable skill to get a work visa and patience with the process it's not so bad. The actual process is probably ridiculous, I imagine there's one or more folks on Dakka that have done it.

Do it. It will only improve your shooting, but be aware that you may be buying a lot of gear in the following months . Once people start moving around and actually trying to engage targets at various ranges, seems like a lot of them find that what they currently have doesn't work quite as well as it looked like it would on paper.

Myself I have gone through a boatload of slings, mag pouches, and holsters.

Oh...and you'll need ammo. Become accustomed to bulk ammo prices (And discounts!)

Great minds think alike.
Mine was technically an office. Then my minis, paints, and airbrush joined, then my safe and ammo storage cabinet. Now I'm looking for a reloader that won't break the bank, preferably progressive, that will do handgun, rifle, and shot gun. If that's not possible I'll go for a progressive for shotgun and load everything else one at a time.

Yep, just have to figure a way to clear out some old furniture then its off we go reloading. Not doing 3 gun right now. First option is IDPA as there’s a range that has competitions every Thursday so that fits my “I’m just a travelin man” lifestyle, and its less expensive of the wallet.

Well ya see, I like targets that don't move around so much (Seeing as the reason FOR the gun is to make things stop moving) and I don't like it too terribly much when the targets are small...and clays don't qualify in either category!

Reloading is key.

I went for the alternate path. My AR15 and my G17 both eat wolf just as well as they eat federal. Much less time consuming! Reloading is what I will do when I finally get around to buying a Ye Olde Bolt Gun with Ye Olde Hubble Space Telescope.

I hear ya. However even with Wolf (hah get some brass bear ammo for "cheap") pistol shooting is off the chart on expensive. reloading is usually less expensive.

I'd imagine they'd be closer to .45ACP on the cost front but I could be extremely wrong. I just know I can get 9mms about $8 - $9 a box if I am careful and hit sales/really cheap foreign stuff.

These things are truly mass-produced and low-quality as far as rifles go, but if you take care of it in even a halfway decent way they will last you another 70 years. And despite all the risk of having low quality parts that may fall apart in your hands and a safety that might not even exist these things are some of the most accurate rifles I have shot.

I have been looking at the "scout rifle" concept, especially the Ruger Scout Rifle, and I was thinking about fixing up my Mosin Nagant Carbine and making it fit the "scout rifle" spec.

Old Colt cap N ball revolvers always seem to have the most elegant lines to me.

OT: was at Gander Mountain taking in her Browning to get fixed with the smith as the Wife did the impossible and blew up a .22. Mall ninjas looking at the black rifles and the clerk showing off. I don't miss guys like that.

Yea, I think its the mix of the strait lines and the rounded edges, Im not sure, but revolvers of any type are just nice to look at. And how the hell do you blow up a .22?

Mind you've we have shot a Ruger .22 target so much it wore out and the frame cracked with the internals shattered. Thats how we tell its time to retire a pistol.

I did have a guy's blackhawk cylinder standing next to me blow up, sending a piece into my butt when I was in college.

Here's my Saiga 12...converted it myself. Takes a special sort of person to spend hundreds on a gun only to immediately rip it apart and take a drill press to it...was my first gun purchase too. Also have a SPAS 12.

If you hate something enough to shoot at it, better shoot at it with 7.62mm....

My latest toy. Springfield M1A standard wearing a Knight's Armament M14 RAS, Leupold Mk 4 LR/T 10x40mm M3 in Leupold Super-High Rings and a Harris LM bipod. Cheekpad is a SAM splint folded up and taped the crap out of. Looks completely out of place on a brand new stock, but works very well. Gives a great cheek weld and puts me right behind the Leupold.

Second newest rifle. Remington 700 SPS Tactical with a Timney 510 trigger set for 1.5lbs in a H&S Precision PST012 stock. Leupold Mk 4 ER/T 6.5-20x50mm M5 in Seekin's Medium Rings on a Seekins 20 MOA base. Harris BRM bipod and a Triad Tactical stock pack in ranger green.

Been recovering from surgery, haven't been able to get out to the range. Haven't horded enough 175gr OTM to feel comfortable digging into my stash yet, either.

This is my favorite of my ARs. Probably the favorite of my guns. Definitely the one I'd pick up in case of a zombie apocolypse.

Given by the fact that you had the attention to detail you had to notice that, I'd say you've probably had the same or similar training.

At the range - before I got the laser and light for it.

My collection last year. Some things have been changed around - sold my M1A SOCOM 16 and got a full sized M1A standard, sold my midlength AR and got a Remington 700 SPS Tactical, added my Block II AR build, and my wife's AR (the one with the EOTech) got a new Spike's upper and TA33 ACOG. Also missing two Marlin 795s, my Beretta 92FS, a Winchester 1300 Defender 12 ga and my H&R Topper shotgun.
