I’m certainly no expert in any of this, having no artist skills or ventured into any sort of strategy game like this before, but I think whatever the outcome it will be an interesting experience. I would be happy for anyone’s thoughts, feedback, encouragement or (constructive ) criticism, both with my modelling & painting, along with the general idea of a “start to finish” documentary of the building of an army by a total beginner through to the final stages of battling!

Welcome to Dakka

It's a great idea having the video blogs showing your progression through the learning of the rules and modeling aspect of hobby. If you are open to suggestion, I think what might get even more support/input would be to have supporting pictures of the models you've finished, as with your video the units were quite blurry and on a small screen (IE: my laptop) I couldn't really make out to much detail.

I believe that if you were to start a painting blog in the Dakka P&M Blogs and continued with the videos and detailed shots of the models it could do quite well.

If I was to offer any painting tips it would be these:
- Prepping your models is invaluable, removing mold lines, drilling barrels (for the Space Wolf army if you start one) test fitting, a good clean primer coat will add a lot more to the overall look
- Thin your paints, adding water to the paints and doing multiple thin layers will give a greater consistency to the models

Thanks for the advice; will take that on board. Shame about the camera I know, its a webcam and the stills are from my phone "The shame!" Just thought it might be interesting to try out from start to finish as someone completely unbiased.
I initially thought it was quite a solitary hobby but I'm finding out more and more how welcoming people are and genuinely helpful. I'm really looking forward to future videos. If you want to subscribe to the youtube channel for regular updates I'll be talking about some of the advice I've received on the forum for other beginners.

Very interesting idea you have here, many people have had unboxing and general vids on the hobby but ive never seen one from a rather new player. A nice change of perspective! I am also a fellow Wood Elf player, between the Ent-like models and naturalistic theme i couldnt resist! It is a fun army but you'll find in order to keep your models alive on the battlefield you will need more "wood" than "elf". The elves provide the magic and ranged bows while the Treekin and Treeman bear the brunt of the fighting. Warhammer and WH40K are VERY social hobbies and at least for me provide a much needed "rest" from work and reality... Plus once you get past the learning curve of painting and modeling it is quite addictive! As it's been said already, you'll know doubt find yourself very popular in the community, female gamers aren't all that common. In fact, to some hobbyists, females in general aren't all that common.

As for the escapism factor with gaming or this specific hobby it is a real attraction to me. I'll be uploading a new video on Monday with some better photos and clearer picture I hope.

After all, if your setting is an entire galaxy and there are countless civilisations(Alien and human.) in varying points of growth, then the possibilities are vast!
40k can seem quite shallow, and it's true that Games Workshop(I'm not one of the haters.) is dumbing it down for the kids(Teenie Marinies) but i believe it's much deeper than it seems at first. In fact, the grim darkness of the far future highlights a lot serious blemishes of the human condition. The Imperium of Man is rife with hypocrisy, excessive bureaucracy and injustice, traitors hide easily inside it's massive and archaic machine. The alien races also shine some interesting lights on humanity, but i'm rambling.

Well i'm a soft touch for a good story but if it's the models that keep your interest it's all about personal taste. Arguably, 40k offers a much larger range of variation in it's miniatures, even within each army. In the end it's down to preference.

As for the rules system, 40k is more about the individual than a rank of troops. There has also been a very clear increase in the popularity of mechanised forces and tanks in general over the last few years. It's possible to play without them, but most competitive lists will include a few machines of war to help secure victory. Shooting is also more important in 40k, well, at least, it's got higher presence. Being shot at is a constant worry , you consistently have to plan to evade being shot down b any means necessary while bringing your own weapons to bear on the enemy.


I think escapism is one of the main attraction for hobbyists, you'll find a lot of people also play RPGs. Interestingly there aren't as many MMO(Warcraft, etc.) players as you might expect, why? MMOs kill all your hobby time and eventually your hobby, and then they take everything else. Been there, done that, don't want the t-shirt thank you very much. Escapism is the reason i get so involved in the story i guess, i love inventing my own little snippets of the galaxy, without disturbing the canon of course, 40k is great for this.
