Codex: Tyranids

hey guys just though I would take some time to propose some changes to the Tyranids. Some are major and some a minor. This hasn't been run tested yet.

Evolutions you can only take one evolution per brood, all models in the brood have to take the same evolution. (these will give you greater customization of your swarm)

Muscle Structure: adds +1" to movement, running and assaults and consolidation /1pt per model
Muscle Mass: adds +1 S to the model profile / 5 pts per model
Extended Carapace: adds +1 T to the model profile / 15 pts per model
Body Mass: adds +1 W to the model profile / 30 pts per model
Limbs: adds +1 A to the model profile / 5 pts per model

Armoured shell: confers 2+/ 6+ invuln
Frag spines: all assualting units within 6" may assault as if they had assualt grenades. (I was thinking of the Horvigon and Carnifex being like the Land Crusader.)

HQ

The Swarmlord 280
Warp Field Dome: this counts can a psychic ability that automaticly hits, every friendly model within 6" confers a 3+ invuln / 40 pts

Horvigon 160
Unit Type: Monstrous Creature
Weapons: Bonded exoskeleton, Scything Tolans
Special Rules: Synapse Creature, Brood Progenitor, Psyker, Shadow of the Warp, Spawn Hormagaunt, Bouncing Leap
Psychic powers: Domination

Options:
Take one of the following: an additional set of Scything Talons/ 5 pts, Crushing Claws/ 25 pts
Take any of the following: Frag spines / 5 pts, Adrenal glands / 10 pts, Toxin Sacs / 10 pts, Acid blood / 15 pts, Implant attack / 15 pts, Toxic miasma / 15 pts, Regeneration / 30 pts
Take any additional psychic power: Catalyst / 15 pts, Overrun / 15 pts

Overrun: a psychic shooting attack that automaticly hits. All units within 12" gain the Assault grenades special rule.

ELITES

Lictor
upgrade one Lictor in your army to a Deathleaper / 75 pts

Zoanthrope
upgrade one Zoanthrope in your army to The Doom of Malan'tai / 30 pts

TROOPS

Warrior 40 pts per model
upgrade one Warrior in the Brood to Tyranid Prime / 40 pts
Etenal Warrior special rule

Genestealer 17 pts per model
Special rule: They're coming through the walls

They're coming through the walls confers the Assualt Grenades special rule

Termagant and Hormaguant
Special rule: Clog gears

Clog gears: if a brood of gaunts consists of 20 models or more the unit can dive into the movement system of the vehicle, using they're mass numbers to disrupt the vehicle. the assualt player can destroy models to attack the vichicle each model destroying in this way adds 1 strength to the attack, to a max of 10. (Nid tank shock!)

Heavy Support

Carnifex
upgrade one Carnifex in your army to Old One Eye / 100 pts

In summary of major change, add more assualt through cover, an Evolution system, a new unit and changed the legendaries to sargants

Automatically Appended Next Post:
One of the people I play with asked me if to think the max Brood sizes should be increased. Example Gaunts being increased from 30 to 50. but i just can judge the power of that.

Totally overpowered imo.
If its a psychic shooting attack he has to target a unit/model right? But it then says every friendly model in range gets the save. Seems contradictory?

Dont have my codex to hand, is the Horvigon similar points/stats wise to the Tervi but it spawns Hormys instead?
If so, fair enough, although I'd increase his points a bit since imho Hormys are better then Termies.
Overrun is a nice rule. I'd change it to a single unit only though, whilst I acknowledge Nids got hammered by not having assault grenade options having the whole army running around with them isnt really fair either.

Clog gears is a really interesting little rule. I'll have a think about it some more but sounds very fun.

I think the evolutions may be a little off points wise, +5 points for anotehr attack is a bit low, +1 wound is 30 but T is +15? I think toughness makes much more a diference than wounds.
+1 movement aswell for 1 point? I'd change it to 5 maybe keeping in line with RPJ for Orks vehicles.

You might enjoy having a look at this too:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/403347.page

I find the Swarmlord and well every other tyranid seems to spend the majority of the game hiding in cover until one point at which they stike. I was picturing tyranids with overwheling numbers roving across the board vary quickly. In 5th what do we have? We are blown apart by SM out numbered by IG and slower than Orks.

So our most powerfully guys don't have invulns, that's what I wanted to fix like why is armored shell an armor save for 40 points, while termi armor is 25 points and has a built in 5+invuln. Maybe instead of a 6" bubble maybe he just has the Zoanthrope 3+ invuln.

yeah maybe I should rewrite the Horvigon's point costs but, again haven't tested this yet, which I will Saturday. Just like the Tervigon is a Termagant Queen the Horvigon is a Hormagaunt Queen.

The evolution system I had was just a quick thought I jotted down. and I'll have to run test everything to get a balence.

Clog Gears was suggested to me by a SW player that found it crazy that other factions infantary had ways of dealing with tanks example Meltabombs, but nids dont.

Wow that fandex looks really good that dude put alot of work into it! and I see he has alot of the changes I wanted to put in. I'll have to print that out and test that Saturday Myself.

Codex: Tyranids

Yep, fair point about not having invulns, its another weakness of the Codex.
Bear in mind though that we can select the Venomthrope that gives the 5+ cover save.
Having a 3+ save on Swarmy itself might not be too broken but extending that save to units around him I think would be really overpowered!

Let us know how the test games go.
