Here's an idea: when the Emperor 'ascends', the Astronomican doesn't need psykers anymore. The Emperor can power it from the warp and extend it's light across the entire galaxy. Necrons are still there. Tyranids are still there. Or maybe some new factions.

And many fictions are set in extended WWII. Indeed, one thing Blizzard is having a problem with now is one-sided lore, moving out of stagnation can be good, but only if everyone can feel good about the changes.

Thats not true. it means the story has progressed alot so you could use any time period to play in. Describing the battles that did happen. Starwars has done this their story ended. But with a big bang.
