Hello, I'm trying to collect dwarves at the moment (only a little while till I can begin painting them, nearly nearly done my guard).
Problem is, my brother and the one other guy who lives nearby (the only people who I can have a quick game with without making the trek to GW, where I can't even go yet for fantasy as my army is nowhere near complete, hell not even together) have decidied to just stop playing fantasy in favour of 40k, no matter how I entreat them. My brother was going to collect high elves (and had already bought the army book and a good few boxes) while the other was keen on VC (he had the army book but not many models yet, we proxied for him). Now they just play 40k and its very frustrating, as I enjoyed the lone game in this edition I got to play before they bailed...

Thoughts on how to entice them back? Brother doesn't give two figs for fluff, but the other one might.

Re:Getting people to play this damndable game with you

I have this problem too.

My most available player is a Dark Elf player - and while we can have matches on a weekly basis, it's tough to motivate someone who's just not into the hobby. My other most motivated player, my brother-in-law, who plays High Elves, lives 7 hours away.

Then there's the stragglers. I have a friend who claims he "really wants to play" and is interested in both Necrons and Dwarfs, but anytime I bring it up he kind of skirts the issue. He missed the whole 750 run, now we've escalated to 1000 and he's yet to buy a single model. He's just too caught up in his MMO's. (yes that's plural.) I have a brother who's around all the time and used to play a lot, back with Catachans he was literally undefeated. He got a little into Tomb Kings a long time ago but then he just has absolutely zero interest now. He didn't even want to make the effort to walk over to my laptop to see the new TK models when I found leaked pictures online.

It's a lonely road we tabletop gamers walk, sometimes. I go through patches where nobody plays and I just paint my army, make terrain, etc. alone.

Here's my advice for you.

Really delve into your hobby. Because after all, that's what it's there for right? For you to have fun. Paint something new. Try building something. Look up the old Skirmish Rulebook, and the General's Compendium, read through the map-based campaigns, smaller fun scenarios in the Skirmish book (i.e. Dwarves trying to close a giant iron door in a hallway crowded with Skaven, a small band of Core troops being ambushed by giant spiders in the woods, successfully steal a Griffin's egg) and usually those books really motivate me to try new things and make it really fun with a few models. In the General's Compendium it has rules for a map-based campaign where you seize territories, reinforce those territories with more troops, raze other sections of the map... It's awesome. If you can entice our friends with little games, you might be able to get them hooked. 40k is simpler than Fantasy, but you have an edge and there is still hope if they're hooked on the hobby already. In my opinion, there's so much more to worry about in Fantasy (flanks, formations, etc.), and (especially with those old supplements that GW NEVER should have discontinued, there was a time when each Skirmish scenario had a project and a special order kit to go with it) can really give Fantasy depth that 40k (again in my opinion) just can't seem to achieve.

So to sum it up, I would try to lure them with smaller games. Get them to test out those models they bought so they just don't go to waste sitting there collecting dust. It's daunting to get into a whole new animal with Fantasy, especially when it involves painting/assembling a whole other army. But VC just got new (awesome) models, and the High Elves are fun to play, especially considering you're playing their ancient grudge-holders. You could also bring it up to other friends, see if they're interested in giving it a shot. I never expected my regular opponent to be into it, but he turned out to be the most consistent.

Good luck, ser.

If you can go to a gw or hobby storethat has tables and games regularly and meet other regulars make friends and then you have more people to play with.

Also as said above small games are pretty fun as well and can be done with a few models.

Go to the gaming thread and post your town/city and see if there are other people out there that may also motivate your friends to play.

Aha I actually used it in my regular vocabulary before, i.e. "You got it, sir." But then when read all of Martin's series, I started spelling it with the "e". It just ended up sticking.

Also, as for the painting/building thing. I built and painted my Dark Elf player's entire army for motivation. He didn't have the patience for either. So that is an option as well, though it's a -ton of work. Just saying, I think Wood Elves have a better chance then Tau...) and I like that Fantasy doesn't have such dominating shooting. You get into combat quicker, where, if played right, things can turn the tide of the game for you. Sure, there are some awkward rules (random charge range?) and some bad ones (dead or fled. If the unit is neither by the end, you get NO points. Of course, 40k has a very similar idea) Hell, if Fantasy, Leadership matters more! You can actually run a terror based army, which I've been wanting to try for quite a while now! To the OP, your GW sounds GREAT. I fully support just starting to troll down there, since you'll have a greater pool of likely people and new people all the time (in theory XD)

Good luck!

Getting people to play this damndable game with you

I'm having the same issue as you are. My suggestion, since you have two guys who seem to have been lured by the siren call of 40K? Wait them out. 40K is easier to get into, but its fluff is somewhat shallow, as are its strategies and tactics. If they're gamers, they'll eventually want to do something with a little more meat to it, and as they already have the models, well, Fantasy would be a natural choice.

In the mean time, read up on the rules, until you know them backwards and forwards. It'll really help a lot if there's no fumbling around for Overrun rules and how Characters behave when you're in the thick of battle, and smoother games are more fun. Go to the game store, even with a half-finished army. Work on the army there, if it's allowed- if not, (which would just be odd) just go there to hang out and ask around for other fantasy players. Try to set up games, if you can.

Or, if you know the rules well enough, you could try combining 40K and Fantasy. I did it once, and actually had a blast- just use Fantasy rules for the Fantasy army, and 40K rules for the 40K army- 40k are all Skirmishers, and all Fantasy wounds reduce armour saves with high strength. Magic happens when Psychic powers happen, but neither can effect the other.

Trust me, if they've played a few games of 40k where that 40mm Autocannon shell has been stopped by Marine Power Armour, and they're annoyed with the lack of modifiers to BS, they'll at the least be intrigued when you pull those rules out of the Fantasy rulebook.
