Newbie questions about Tyranids.

odorofdeath wrote:2. Sigh... no.

Unless there have been some FAQ Shenanigans I'm unaware of, Tyranid Primes can join Carnifex broods, even those consisting of a single model. Independent Characters are only unable to join "units that always consist of a single model", which Carnifexes are not.

It's nice, because if the Prime is behind a gaunt screen then half the squad is in cover and the 'Fex gets a cover save.

if yes, can i get cover saves from a termagaunt if i allocate the wound in the Tyranid Prime?

If a Tyranid Prime has joined a unit of Termagants, and the unit of Termagants is not itself in cover, then you cannot take cover saves on wounds that you allocate to it. If the Tyranid Prime is behind the unit of Termagants but not joined to it, than the Prime may take cover saves. In the latter case, the opponent cannot fire at both squads at once - he or she must declare before shooting which of the two (the squad of Termagants or the Tyranid Prime) is the target of shooting.

A Carnifex can be taken in broods so this rule doesn't apply, the unit as capable of being larger than one model. A Prime can happily join a single Fex and its a fairly effective tactic, it works the same way attaching a Tyrant to a single Tyrant Guard works. Usually you see two Primes and two Fexs though in a very powerful Deathstar.

Newbie questions about Tyranids.

50% of the models need to be in cover in order to get a coversave.

A prime with 2 carnifexes do not have 50% of it's model in cover, only 33% (unles you actualy have cover and not a gaunt screen).

I would keep them in a brood of one.

Or if you like the overcosted carnifex (it is not bad, only 40 points to expensive in this meta) you can always go for the cheap gargoyle screen.
